Buzău can be explored through its buildings and collections: an 18th-century house, churches from different periods and unusual museum collections each offer a different perspective. A cultural trip therefore offers more than a single architectural theme; the city’s history is reflected in historic buildings as well as in exhibitions and objects.

Architecture and Collections

Casa Vergu-Mănăilă is a preserved feudal building from the 18th century, documented in a written record in 1794. Its architecture combines an old folk style with the Brâncovenesc style. The house is notable not only as a historic building: since 1976, it has housed the Ethnography and Folk Art Collection, a department of the Buzău County Museum.

The County Museum’s telephone collection offers another perspective on history. It comprises more than 300 devices of Romanian and foreign origin, including devices from Germany, France, Belgium and the USSR. Arranged chronologically, the items illustrate the history of the telephone and the role of the invention in people’s lives. All have been restored using original components and are functional.

The exhibition “Ocolul lumii pe jos. Povestea celor 497 perechi de opinci” focuses on heritage associated with the Romanian globe-trotter Dumitru Dan. It displays 497 pairs of opinci, made by folk artisan Doina Mușat. Interactive storytelling lessons entitled “Călătorie pe glob” and craft workshops entitled “Semne tradiționale cusute” are regularly held in the exhibition.

Churches and the Historic City

Biserica „Buna Vestire” – Banu is the oldest brick-built church in Buzău County and dates from the 16th century. Its exterior architecture shows a pronounced Brâncovenesc influence. The Voivodal Cathedral „Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, the old bishop’s cathedral, offers a glimpse of another era: Matei Basarab founded it in 1649. Its interior painting was executed in fresco in the neoclassical style; in 2011, a silver reliquary containing parts of the relics of eight saints was installed there.

The historic center links the old bazaar building and the former Obor area on Alexandru Marghiloman Street with the Palatul Comunal. The latter is considered an emblematic city landmark and is distinguished by its eclectic combination of different architectural styles. The ensemble on Strada Cuza Vodă is included on the list of Historic Monuments.

The restored and adapted Old Seminary „Chesarie Episcopul” houses the Diocesan Church Museum, with an extensive exhibition of old religious art. Biserica Sfinții Îngeri also has a collection of religious culture, including valuable icons and old church books. The historical exhibition „Buzăul – oraș deschis de istorie” presents the city’s history on 24 panels with explanations in Romanian and English.

Crâng and Practical Planning

Crâng also connects the city’s history with a large green space. Crâng Forest Park covers 187.18 hectares and includes the 9.4-hectare Crâng Park around the lake. The people of Buzău have used Crâng as a place for promenades since 1828; Crâng Park is listed as a Historic Monument under code BZ-III-s-B-02500.

Offers listed by the County Museum for 2025 include guided tours in Romanian and English on request, as well as a free self-guided tour option, including at the main premises. Check the current regulations before travelling.
