The commune of Măgura lies on the right bank of the Buzău, in the river’s middle course and in the Subcarpathian region along the Carpathian bend. Its landscape combines the river corridor with forested heights. It also includes historic sites and a nearby sculpture camp, which is located in the commune of Tisău. When choosing where to stay, it is worth distinguishing Măgura itself from this cultural site in the surrounding area.

The River Landscape and Forested Heights

In the area of the commune of Măgura, near Ciuta, the Buzău corridor begins as a gorge-like, narrow valley 300 to 500 meters wide. To the south, the steep slope of Dealul Ciolanu flanks the valley. This places a narrow stretch of river and the adjoining slopes side by side as two distinct landscape features.

Forests cover 62.37 percent of the area of the commune of Măgura; deciduous forests predominate in its wooded areas. Above Ciuta, Vârful Cetățuia reaches an elevation of 631.7 meters. Together, the river setting, forested areas, and prominent high point give a concrete picture of the landscape, without reducing the entire commune to a single viewpoint.

The natural environment also includes two mineral springs within the commune. One contains sodium, magnesium, and calcium; its mineralization is 1.449 g/l. Its composition is a distinct aspect of the local natural features, alongside the valley and forests.

Historic Sites and Craft Traditions

The church “Intrarea în Biserică a Maicii Domnului” was built in 1762 in the village of Ciuta. It is listed as an architectural historic monument in Buzău County. Schitul Sfântul Nifon was founded in 1811 and reactivated in 1990. Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul recalls a different historical connection: it marks the place where the prince and his army spent a night in October 1599.

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul monument is at a viewpoint with sweeping views over the Buzău Valley. At this memorial site, a specific historical tradition meets a wide-open landscape view. Stoneworking and pottery are also local craft traditions associated with Măgura. These traditions complement the history of the churches and monuments with a cultural connection to craftsmanship.

The Sculpture Camp in the Surrounding Area

The Măgura Sculpture Camp is located in clearings near Ciolanu Monastery, but outside the precise administrative boundaries of Măgura: it is in the commune of Tisău. The 256 groups of statues and individual statues were created by 153 Romanian sculptors, who donated the results of their work to Buzău County. The number of works and the variety of their creators make the camp a different cultural point of interest from the individual historic monuments. When planning a visit, this distinction can also be made clear geographically: the site is near Măgura, but is a separate destination.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

The settlements of the commune of Măgura lie along National Road DN 10, which runs from Buzău via Nehoiu to Brașov and follows the Buzău Valley. County Road DJ 203G adds to the road network; it leads from DN 10 to the Tabăra de Sculptură Măgura and into the Nișcov Valley. Check local road conditions before setting out.

For the settlements of the commune of Măgura, the Buzău–Nehoiu railway line is listed as having a station in the commune’s administrative center and a stop in Ciuta. Check current train services before your trip. Choose your actual accommodation location according to your main destination.
