In Câmpulung, churches and a monastery stand alongside museum collections, historic architecture and parks, each with its own character. The themes range from archaeological finds and regional history to rare trees and a bathing lake. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural history, architecture or the landscape.

Churches, a monastery and historic architecture

More than 150 buildings in Câmpulung are listed in Romania’s National Register of Historic Monuments. In addition, a protected historic urban area is designated by law as an area of exceptional value to the national cultural heritage. The city’s architecture encompasses local ethnographic forms, Art Nouveau, the Neo-Romanian style, Art Deco and International Modernism. Architecture thus offers a distinct way to explore the town’s history, alongside its individual religious buildings.

The Sf. Iacob Church in the Bărăția ensemble is a historic and architectural monument dating from the 13th century. It is considered the oldest religious building in the Archdiocese of Bucharest. Those interested in religious history will find another special focus at Mănăstirea Negru Vodă: the monastery is considered the most important monastic ensemble in Muscel. According to tradition, it was founded in 1215 by Radu Negru Voievod. The Valea Argeșelului and Culoarul Rucăr–Bran route includes the Bărăția ensemble in Câmpulung.

The stone Castrum Jidava near Câmpulung is also part of the region’s history. It is considered the most important fortification on the Limes Transalutanus; the fort houses a museum. This brings the view of an archaeological structure together with a specific historical context.

Museums and regional history

Muzeul Municipal Câmpulung was officially founded in 1889 and was one of Romania’s first museums. Its historical exhibition covers the history of the Muscel region from the earliest times through to the end of the 20th century. Other collection areas offer different perspectives: exhibits include Bronze Age archaeological finds, Hellenistic imported pottery, Roman pottery and weapons from excavations at Castrum Jidava. A natural history collection broadens the range of subjects.

The museum also includes an exhibition of works by Romanian artists from the interwar period and the period immediately after the Second World War. The Muscel section on ethnography and folk art is housed in Casa Ștefănescu, a building dating from 1735. The collections can therefore be grouped by the focus of your visit: archaeology and regional history, art, or ethnography and folk art. Together, these different areas span the period from early finds to more recent chapters of regional and cultural history.

Parks and cultural landscape

Parcul Kretzulescu includes a bathing lake of about 800 m² on the banks of the Târgului River. The Golescu dendrological park offers a different connection to the landscape, with rare trees and shrubs, including specimens more than 100 years old. These two park themes add a distinct note alongside the churches, monastery and museum collections.

The Golescu ensemble is listed as a historic monument. In Fundația Pro Patrimonio’s concept, it serves as an observatory for the cultural landscape; the concept includes projects and workshops held annually. Câmpulung thus offers a choice between specific natural features and a cultural perspective on the landscape.

Planning your stay

Câmpulung is listed as the location of a tourist information centre on the Valea Argeșelului and Culoarul Rucăr–Bran route. If you would like to include it in your plans, check local opening details before your trip. To choose a focus for your stay, you can consider the historic monuments and museums as well as the parks, each with its own distinctive features.
