In the Izvorul Scării Valley, a cascade of waterfalls forms with a total vertical drop of about 200 metres. It includes the cascade known to locals as Cascada Pișătoarea, whose uninterrupted drop is over 50 metres. These figures describe two different scales: the cascade’s total vertical drop in the valley and Pișătoarea’s continuous drop.

Mountain Trails to Șaua Scării

The mountain hiking trail from the Topolog Valley to Șaua Scării is marked with a blue cross and listed as a summer route taking three hours. In winter, the route carries a hazard warning; check the markings on site before planning your hike. Traseul 15 Cruce Albastră runs from Sălătrucu to Șaua Scării via a 33-kilometre forest road. The starting points and measurements differ: the mountain hiking trail begins in the Topolog Valley and has a stated duration, while the forest road starts in Sălătrucu and is described by its length.

From Sălătrucu, Stâna din Scara can be reached by a high-clearance off-road vehicle. Seasonal conditions may affect whether the route is practical; check conditions before setting out. Both the type of vehicle and the time of year are important considerations when planning this drive.

Via Valahia and Cycling Routes

Via Valahia crosses Țara Loviștei and then reaches Sălătrucu. Between Căineni Vâlcea and Târgoviște, it is about 150 kilometres long and can be travelled in full or in part, on foot or by bicycle. The option to choose just one section leaves the scope open; the approximate length refers to the entire route. In contrast to the three-hour summer hike to Șaua Scării, this is a longer route where you can choose between the full distance and a section of it.

For cyclists, a route runs from Curtea de Argeș to Sălătrucu along DJ703H, following the Topolog River. Another cycling route comes from the Vidraru area, passes through Poiana Runcurea and ends in the commune of Sălătrucu. The endpoints are described differently: the route from Curtea de Argeș leads to Sălătrucu, while the one from the Vidraru area ends in the commune. This distinction helps identify each route precisely.

Monastery History and Churches

From the centre of Văleni village, a local road follows the stream to Mănăstirea Văleni. The monastery is administratively part of Sălătrucu commune. The first church of the Văleni hermitage was built in 1691–1692 by Zaharia Grădişteanu. The village connection, the commune affiliation and the church’s early history describe different aspects of the site.

The “Sf. Nicolae” Church in Sălătrucu commune is a local architectural monument dating from the 16th century. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and again in 1811, so its building history spans several periods.

The Sălătrucu-Bocănita monastery complex dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Schitul Bocănita, a small idiorhythmic monastic complex, dates from the late 19th century. These different periods give each historic site its own timeframe.
