For a stay in Băiculeşti, there are two clearly distinct directions to explore: the architectural and ecclesiastical history around Tutana, and the landscape shaped by the Argeș River, with Zigoneni Reservoir. If you are looking for accommodation, you can choose according to your interests: historic architecture, the hills, or a cycling route with explicitly stated physical requirements.
Tutana: Building phases and church art
Mănăstirea Tutana is a historic monument complex in the commune of Băiculeşti, located on DN 7C. The former monastery church is now a parish church. The Church of “Sf. Atanasie” was built before 1497 and rebuilt between 1582 and 1588. It is considered the only Romanian church with this dedication.
The complex features a range of architectural details: the church has a three-conch ground plan, and its façades are built of exposed brick and decorated with two tiers of arcades. The ruins also date from several different periods. The remains of the bell tower date from 1582 to 1588, the ruins of the monks’ cells from the 15th to the 18th century, and the enclosure wall from the 16th century. The complex also includes the princely residence of Mihnea Turcitul.
Another church in the commune
The Orthodox Church of “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” in Băiculeşti is an active place of worship serving the local community. The parishes of Băiculeşti and Buneşti were major benefactors of the church. Its interior painting dates from 1951 and was executed by Emil Ivănescu-Millan. Thus, alongside the older building phases at Tutana, the heritage spans into the mid-20th century.
The Argeș River, reservoir and hills
Within the commune, Băiculeşti lies on the banks of the Argeș River. There, the river forms Zigoneni Reservoir, which covers 65 hectares and lies between Băiculeşti and Zigoneni. The reservoir also marks the northern boundary of the commune. The terrain is characterised by numerous hills cut through by a dense network of deep valleys. The water and hilly landscape are among the distinct features that can help shape your travel interests.
At the reservoir, members of AJVPS Argeș with the appropriate permits can fish for recreation and sport. Before travelling, check which permits are required and the rules for using the water.
Cycling route and rail connection
The MTB route runs mostly along unpaved farm tracks and lightly trafficked county and communal roads. It requires good physical fitness and confident bicycle handling on uneven surfaces; take care on busier sections. As surface and traffic conditions can change, check them before setting off.
A local history published in 2023 states that the Pitești–Curtea de Argeș railway line passes through the commune and is served by Băiculeşti railway station. Check current train services before travelling.
