Tău Bistra offers several distinct themes: the Masa Jidovului natural monument, other rock formations, water infrastructure, a circular route and the history of Oașa Monastery. When planning, it is worth considering these highlights separately: the rock sites have different characteristics, the circular route takes a certain amount of time, and the monastery’s historical development and youth camps are at the heart of its story.
Natural Monument, Rock and Water
Masa Jidovului is a natural monument in the village of Tău Bistra, in the commune of Șugag. The protected area covers 0.20 hectares. The rock formation is also known as Masa Uriașului and is located on the right bank of the Sebeș, close to the DN 67C, the Transalpina.
Stânca Grunzii, also known as La Grumaji, consists of crystalline schists. It lies in a section of the valley that narrows sharply, creating the impression of a wild gorge; there, the river makes several winding bends. The two rock sites have different defining features: Masa Jidovului is notable for its protected status, area and location on the Sebeș, while the rock, valley shape and river course shape the description of Stânca Grunzii.
The Tău Bistra reservoir was built for hydroelectric power and can also be used for tourism. Its arched concrete dam is 78 metres high. Alongside the natural rock formations, the focus here is therefore on a structure whose form and purpose are equally relevant.
Poarta Raiului–Prisaca Circular Route: Timing and Options
The Poarta Raiului–Prisaca circular route runs around the 1,766-metre-high Vf. Canciu peak, at the foot of the Șureanu Mountains. The hike is easy and suitable for families, with only minor elevation changes. Allow about three to four hours for the route—it is a several-hour excursion, not a short walk for a spare moment.
The circular route is also recommended for cycling. This offers different ways to experience the same route: on foot, it is described as easy and family-friendly, while the cycling recommendation provides another way to plan your visit. Trail conditions and signage may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning.
Monastery Church and Youth Camps
The wooden church of Oașa Monastery was founded in 1943 by the writer Mihail Sadoveanu. In 1983, it was moved to its present location in the Poarta Raiului clearing while the Oașa reservoir and Oașa dam were being built. The dates mark two distinct stages in its history: its founding and, later, its relocation.
Oașa Monastery in Tău Bistra organizes youth camps focused on spirituality, tradition and culture. The dates of individual camps may vary. If a camp is the reason for your trip, check the relevant date in advance. This allows you to distinguish the site’s historical significance from a visit planned around a specific program.
Șureanu Ski Resort
Șureanu Ski Resort is located on the DJ709K in Tău Bistra, Alba County. It adds a specific connection to skiing alongside the nature and culture themes, offering another point to consider when choosing the focus of your stay.
