Churches and memorial sites give Pianu de Sus a clear cultural focus. Three churches reveal different architectural and commemorative traces; a monument in the town center adds to this picture. When choosing a place to stay, it is particularly worth considering whether church architecture, inscriptions, and local remembrance match your travel interests.
Churches, Beam Paintings, and Grave Markers
The wooden church of Cuvioasa Paraschiva is located in the upper part of the cemetery of Parish I in Pianu de Sus. It is built of fir wood on a stone foundation. The painting was applied directly to the wooden beams, so the painted surface and the structure are one and the same here. Decorated wooden grave posts bearing the symbol “XIII” still stand in the cemetery around the church. The posts recorded in Pianu de Sus are carved with geometric motifs from top to bottom. This site thus connects the church’s wooden construction with another form of local woodwork.
The Buna Vestire Church is in the upper part of Pianu de Sus and is surrounded by arcades painted in 1929. Cyrillic inscriptions, some dating from the time of construction, have been preserved in the church to this day. Another historical trace leads to the Nașterea Sf. Ioan Botezătorul Church in the lower part of the village, built around 1837. According to local tradition, a wealthy family from the village contributed to its construction and donated a cauldron filled with gold coins. The two churches offer different points of interest: at Buna Vestire, the focus is on the arcades and inscriptions; at Nașterea, it is on the period of construction and a story passed down about its origins.
Commemoration in the Town Center and Parish Church
The monument to the heroes who fell in the First World War stands in the center of Pianu de Sus. It lists the names of 72 fallen soldiers, making remembrance tangible in the heart of the village. Another historical trace is the tricolor flag carried in 1918 by the horse-riding group from Pianu de Sus. It is kept in Orthodox Parish Church No. 1 in Pianu de Sus. The monument and the flag represent different forms of commemoration: the naming of the fallen on the one hand, and the preserved flag on the other.
An Annual Event
Every year, around December 1, the residents of Pianu de Sus gather in front of the town hall. They listen to the Hora Unirii and Christmas carols performed by the church choir, drink mulled wine, and celebrate the National Day. This annual event adds another dimension to the church and monument themes, offering a recurring glimpse into village life.
Compare Distances by Their Reference Points
When planning your journey, it is helpful to distinguish the stated distances by their reference points. The distance from the center of Pianu de Sus to the DN7 is 7.8 kilometers. The distance from highway kilometer 24+110 to the center of Pianu commune is 7 kilometers. These are two different distances, not two figures for the same route. Therefore, compare the figures directly only when the starting and ending points match.
