For a culture-focused trip, Ighiu offers clearly distinct themes: the Roman earthwork fort on Măgulici and church buildings from different centuries. The history of the village spans Roman military history, an Orthodox church, and the structures that make up a Reformed church ensemble.

Churches and Architectural History in Ighiu

The Orthodox Church of SfĂąnta Parascheva was built in 1724. Another highlight is the ensemble of the Reformed Church of Ighiu. It includes the Reformed Church, the ruins of the fortified enclosure, and the former Evangelical rectory of the Reformed congregation.

The Reformed Church was built between 1781 and 1783 and is classified stylistically as late Baroque and Rococo. It is surrounded by the remains of a 15th-century fortification, with some Gothic elements still preserved. One architectural detail points to another phase in the site's history: the entrance bastion and Gothic gate are incorporated into a two-storey building erected in 1712.

The historic organ is also part of the church's history. Johan Han the Younger made it in 1796. The grave of PĂ©ter Bod—a pre-Enlightenment scholar, former Reformed pastor, historian, and Transylvanian writer—is in the cemetery of the Reformed Church. The ensemble therefore encompasses not only church architecture but also places of remembrance and several distinct architectural features.

The Roman Earthwork Fort on Măgulici

The earthwork fort at Ighiu was a small Roman fortification. Its purpose was to guard the entrance to the gold-bearing region of the province of Dacia. It stood on the summit of the 492-metre-high Măgulici hill. Its elevated position provided a commanding vantage point and good views in every direction. Both its military function and its location on the hill are important to understanding the fort.

The Gemina Victrix thematic trail brings this Roman period to life: it retraces the march of Legio XIII Gemina towards the Ampoi Valley and the construction of the Roman fort at Măgulici. The trail was created in 2023 and is marked on site with the TA trail symbol, a blue triangle. Check the trail markings and conditions locally before setting out.

Climbing, Hiking and Nature Observation

Piatra Poienii is located in the commune of Ighiu, near the village of Ighiel. There are more than 19 equipped sport climbing routes there. The Iezerul Ighiel nature reserve is also in Ighiu commune, in the area of Ighiel village, and is a destination for hiking and nature observation. The two destinations appeal to different interests: Piatra Poienii is for sport climbing, while Iezerul Ighiel is for hiking and nature observation.

A Culinary Snapshot from 2026

The 2026 edition of “Aventuri Culinare” was a traditional culinary competition held in Ighiu commune, Alba County. More than ten teams from Romania and neighbouring regions prepared traditional recipes outdoors in cauldrons over open fires. This example pertains to that edition and describes its culinary focus.
