The Transalpina, traditional woodcraft and protected landscapes give Șugag a range of travel highlights. In the commune, the DN67C, the Transalpina, forms the backbone of the road network; within the commune, it runs for 62 kilometers.

Transalpina and Lake Oașa

The Transalpina, also known as “Drumul Regelui,” runs through the Parâng Mountains and connects Sebeș with Novaci. In the Șugag tourist area, it passes over the Oașa Dam. Lake Oașa is also part of the tourist area: the 460-hectare reservoir stretches for 6 kilometers. The lake is suitable for watching the sunrise, nature photography and walks along the shore. This offers a choice between two distinct focuses: the Transalpina connects places across the mountains, while nature observation and paths along the shore take center stage at the lake.

Rock formations and botanical protected areas

The “Pintenii din Coasta Jinei” rock formation consists of isolated, distinctive rocks of crystalline schist and lies at an elevation of 750 to 900 meters. “Masa Jidovului” is also an isolated rock of crystalline schist. It is located on the right slope of the Sebeș Valley above Șugag. The location details distinguish the two rock formations: for the Pintenii, the elevation is the main feature; for Masa Jidovului, it is the position on the valley slope.

The Șugag tourist area also includes two botanical protected areas. “Tinoavele din Luncile Prigoanei” is located in the upper reaches of the Prigoana stream at an elevation of 1,380 to 1,450 meters. “Tinoavele din Lunca Tărtărăului” lies above Lake Oașa. The names are similar, but the location references differ: the first area is defined by the stream and its elevation, while the second is identified by its position above the lake.

Woodcraft and remembrance

Șugag is associated with woodcarving traditions. These include winged distaffs, chain-carved spoons, spindles, cheese molds, shepherds’ staffs and flutes. The “Nicolae Cernat” museum collection includes handcrafted objects made by the late artisan. Woodcraft and the collection give the local cultural heritage a tangible material character.

A bronze bust of the well-known lawyer and writer Ionel Pop was unveiled and consecrated in the center of Șugag commune. In 1935, residents erected a monument in memory of the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War. Alongside the craft traditions, public forms of remembrance are also part of the cultural character of the place.

Customs and traditional activities

The “Zi-i bade cu fluiera” folk festival is held every year in the second half of May. The custom “Statu’ la vase în Lunea Paştelui” takes place on Easter Monday in the churchyard of Șugag commune in the Sebeș Valley. If a date is important to your trip, check the Easter date for the year in question: the custom is tied to a moveable feast, while the folk festival takes place annually during the second half of May.

“Potecu’ stânelor” is a themed walking route connecting several sheepfolds in the area. Tourists can also take part in traditional activities at sheepfolds; participation details may depend on seasonal conditions.
