Rock formations and trails to Poarta Zmeilor

Peștera Poarta Zmeilor cave is located in Sub Piatră, in the commune of Sălciua, at about 1,150 m in the western Trascău Mountains. The natural arch Poarta Zmeilor is just 15 m from the cave entrance. Erosion, corrosion and the dissolution of limestone formed this rock feature. Together, the cave and arch offer a tangible insight into the geological character of the area.

Access to the cave is from the DN 75 via the centre of Sălciua de Jos, followed by the unpaved DC 130. From there, a footpath marked with a red cross continues; it is considered difficult. Take this section into account when planning: the drive does not end at the cave entrance, and the rest of the way is on foot. Road and trail conditions can change; check them before your visit.

Balconul de la Poarta Zmeilor is another specific destination to plan for from Sălciua de Jos. The hiking trail marked with a red cross starts in the town centre; the ascent can take up to three hours. At the destination, a wooden structure is attached to a rock face. It offers panoramic views spanning approximately 180 degrees. You can include the stated ascent time as a separate item in your plans.

Waterfall and access routes

In the Vânătările Ponorului nature reserve, Cascada Dâlbina plunges 25 m over a limestone wall. From Sălciua de Jos, access to this area is via the DC 105, through Sub Piatră and towards Valea în Jos or Valea Poienii. This route differs from the approach to Peștera Poarta Zmeilor via the DC 130. Check road and trail conditions for your destination before visiting.

Monastery and ethnographic museum

The Romanian Orthodox church of Mănăstirea Sub Piatra was built in 1797. Mănăstirea Sub Piatra preserves valuable icons from the former monastery, including a Deisis icon and icons from 1753. Access is via the DN 75 towards Sălciua de Jos; then turn left for 5 km towards Sub Piatră. The church building and the icons offer different historical perspectives: the year it was built points to the church’s history, while the preserved images come from the former monastery.

The Valer Butură Ethnographic Museum was inaugurated on 20 October 2010 and named after the ethnographer Valer Butură. The ethnographic museum in Sălciua is housed in a Moțe house with a wooden veranda and a thatched roof. Two rooms display traditional household items: a loom, a bed, dishes and traditional costumes. The exhibits therefore range from objects used in everyday domestic life to clothing and textile work.

The historic fair tradition

The Târgul de la Sălciua was established in 1909 with two annual fairs: the Târgul Mieilor on 4 April and the Târgul oilor on 20 October. Four revived editions featured livestock shows, folklore performances, art exhibitions and presentations of local traditions. The historical record thus links agricultural markets with cultural and artistic events.
