Poiana Aiudului combines hiking and geology with shepherding traditions. Hiking trail 10MN14 leads from Poiana Aiudului via Șaua Data to Cheile Vălișoarei (Aiudului); the Turca is associated with New Year’s Day, and Împreunatul oilor with driving the sheep to their summer pastures. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the landscape or local customs.
Landscape and Protected Areas
The area around Poiana Aiudului features reef limestone, Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone, and grey dacite. The Cheile Vălișoarei (Aiudului) nature reserve is significant for its geomorphology and botany. Rare plants grow on the slopes cut into Jurassic limestone. The area is a national protected area in IUCN Category IV and a botanical-geological nature reserve.
Cheile Vălișoarei (Aiudului) lies in the eastern Trascău Mountains, in the southern part of the Râmetea Depression, in Alba County and within the administrative territory of the commune of Livezile. These place names help distinguish the gorge as a separate natural area, while the rock types are also mentioned in connection with Poiana Aiudului.
Between Stream and Rock
Along hiking trail 10MN14, the route follows the Rachiș stream and reaches La Găvane after more than 1.5 km. There, the stream has shaped rounded rock formations, several rocky steps and small cascades. If you are interested in the route, there is more to it than a destination name: the stream, rock formations and cascades all characterize the place. Rocks can be slippery when wet, so take this into account when assessing conditions.
From Vârful Data, you can enjoy views of Cheile Vălișoarei (Aiudului) and the Trascău Depression. This viewpoint offers a different aspect of nature from the streamside passage at La Găvane: here, the focus is on the landscape, while there it is on the sequence of water and rock formations.
Cheile Vălișoarei (Aiudului) is suitable for mountaineering and sport climbing, and several routes have been established in the area. Below Colțul Data, at Șaua Data, the rocky area is popular with climbers and paragliders. These activities offer a different way to explore the landscape in addition to hiking.
Along 10MN14, the downy oak forest is protected at the European level. Roe deer can be seen in this forest. Sightings are possible, but are not guaranteed.
Shepherding Traditions Through the Year
In Poiana Aiudului, the Turca masked dance is performed on New Year’s Day. Împreunatul oilor is a festival celebrated when the sheep are driven to their summer pastures. The two traditions mark different times: the Turca takes place on New Year’s Day, while the shepherding festival marks the move to the summer pastures.
At Împreunatul oilor, the amount of milk produced by each owner’s sheep is measured. This determines how much milk that owner is entitled to during the lactation period. The festival therefore combines the occasion of moving the sheep to pasture with a practical rule for allocating the milk. If you want to travel specifically for a festival, check the event date in advance.
