Penalva do Castelo can be explored through two special travel themes: its diverse cultural heritage and trails through varied landscapes. Museums, historic buildings and hiking routes each offer a different focus. Local craft traditions and products further add to the character of the municipality. You can shape your trip around whether you are most interested in history, nature or local produce.
Cultural Heritage and Museums
Casa da Ănsua is an important Baroque manor house. LuĂs de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e CĂĄceres had it built in the second half of the 18th century, around 1780. The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico da Casa da Ănsua explores Portuguese-Brazilian relations in the 18th century. It also focuses on the work of LuĂs de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e CĂĄceres in Mato Grosso between 1772 and 1788.
The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico da MisericĂłrdia de Penalva do Castelo offers a different perspective on local history: it preserves sacred artworks and recalls around four centuries of the Santa Casaâs work in the community. The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Sangemil is on the second floor of Sangemilâs communal oven and explores the bread-making cycle. Together, the three museums cover historical relations, sacred art and the traditional craft of food production.
Other notable buildings include the Mosteiro de Santo Sepulcro, also known as Mosteiro das Ăguas Santas. It is located in the municipality of Penalva do Castelo, in the Viseu district, and was classified as a National Monument in 2023. The Pelourinho de Penalva do Castelo, also known as Pelourinho de Castendo, is classified as a public-interest property; this classification dates from 11 October 1933. The Anta do Penedo do Com is considered one of Penalva do Casteloâs most important archaeological landmarks and one of the regionâs and Portugalâs most magnificent megalithic monuments.
Trails and Landscapes
The Trilho de Castendo combines varied scenery with a clearly described circular route: it is 12.37 kilometres long and takes about three hours and 45 minutes. It passes through urban, rural and wooded areas, returning to the starting point via the Igreja da MisericĂłrdia. The church and its NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico are listed as the final stop on the hike. The route therefore brings together different settings and a cultural point of interest.
Another trail is 12 kilometres long and starts at the NÂȘ. SrÂȘ. da Esperança Chapel in the centre of Vila Cova do Covelo. It focuses on the tradition associated with the mills and the proximity of the Carapito River. The stated lengths of this trail and the Trilho de Castendo are similar; an approximate duration is also provided for the Trilho de Castendo. The Caminho dos Galegos in Mareco offers a different kind of landscape: it runs through a valley between the Serra da Lapeira and Cabeço de Vela.
Mata de Nossa Senhora de Lurdes also brings together nature and faith. It features a cave sanctuary dedicated to popular devotion and has the status of a natural sanctuary; its landscape also includes a riverside gallery along the Coja River. The DĂŁo River runs for 21 kilometres through Penalva do Castelo and is notable for its biodiversity and close contact with nature. Together, these places showcase different aspects of the landscape, without combining the described trails and natural areas into a single route.
