Megalithic monuments, medieval rock-cut tombs and museums give Carregal do Sal a rich and varied cultural profile. The history of olive oil production and the regional significance of Vinho do Dão are also among the themes that can shape a stay here. There are several ways to plan your visit: archaeological sites, historic buildings and collections, or landscape and agriculture. Carregal do Sal is accessible by road via the A25 and by train via the Linha da Beira Alta.

Megaliths and Historic Sites

The Circuito Pré-Histórico Fiais/Azenha links six archaeological sites in Oliveira do Conde and is a marked trail more than seven kilometres long. The six stops include the Complexo Rupestre do Ameal, Orca da Palheira, Orca do Outeiro do Rato, Abrigo da Orca, Orca de Santo Tisco and Dólmen da Orca. The megalithic monuments along the trail were built in the 4th millennium BC. Here, evidence of a very distant past lies alongside places that reveal a different era.

Orca de Santo Tisco is a dolmen with a barely indicated vestibular corridor. Its chamber has a subrectangular floor plan and is made up of nine supporting stones. Orca da Palheira, by contrast, also tells the story of later use: it was partly incorporated into a house, and its burial chamber served as the kitchen for the family living there, “Os Planetas,” until the 1970s. The rock-cut tombs of Cova da Moira date to the Middle Ages; the anthropomorphic group is more specifically dated to the 13th and 14th centuries.

Museums, Architecture and Places of Remembrance

At the Museu Municipal Manuel Soares de Albergaria, valuable collections are displayed across four permanent exhibition rooms. They include painting, archaeology, sculpture, ethnography and weapons. A guided visit can be arranged. Schedule your visit before you travel so that the necessary arrangements can be made.

The Museu Aristides de Sousa Mendes opened on 19 July 2024 as a place for reflection, study and research. Another historic landmark is the Casa do Passal, also known as Vila de São Cristóvão: the property belonged to Aristides de Sousa Mendes and is classified as a National Monument. Aristides de Sousa Mendes was responsible for saving thousands of Jews from Nazi persecution.

The Igreja Matriz de Oliveira do Conde also brings together a variety of historical and artistic features. Its architecture reflects contributions from the 16th to the 18th centuries; the main chapel contains a gilded Joanine altarpiece. The church is also home to the tomb of Fernão Gomes de Góis, chamberlain to King João I. It rests on four lions and features numerous details carved in stone. The Núcleo Museológico das Escolas Primárias is housed in the former Escola Conde Ferreira, the municipality’s first primary school, dating from 1866.

If you plan your stay around the carnival days, you can include the Dança Grande, also known as Dança dos Cús, in Cabanas de Viriato. The tradition is considered intangible cultural heritage and is celebrated with particular intensity on Shrove Monday and Shrove Tuesday. As carnival dates change each year, it is worth checking the exact dates before your trip.

Olive Oil, Wine and Landscape

Olive oil and the famous Vinho do Dão remain important agricultural products of Carregal do Sal. The Núcleo Museológico do Lagar de Varas de Parada offers an insight into oil production. It preserves a 20th-century oil mill with a crusher, presses, vats, millstones, ceramic vessels and press plates. You can see how oil was made by hand, using animals for power at the time. Visits must be arranged in advance.

The Grande Rota do Mondego offers a different perspective: along the route, you can observe riverside vegetation as well as shrubs and flowering plants, which create a particularly colourful natural display in spring. Your trip can therefore focus either on archaeological sites and architectural history or on the landscape, regional products and the traditional methods used to produce them. If you are travelling by train, it is advisable to check the timetable before setting off.
