The Balneário Romano in São Pedro do Sul is open for visits daily from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. Plan your visit during one of these time slots and check the schedule in advance. The Balneário Romano is classified as a National Monument.
Thermal Baths and Roman Heritage
The Termas de São Pedro do Sul have two bathhouses with different functions. The Balneário D. Afonso Henriques is intended for therapeutic treatments and physiotherapy; the Balneário Rainha D. Amélia is for thermal wellness. As the allocation of facilities and services may change, check before your visit which services are currently available at each bathhouse.
The Balneário Romano and the two bathhouses at the Termas offer different options for planning your day: a visit with set time slots in one case, and therapeutic treatments, physiotherapy or thermal wellness in the other. If you plan to visit one of the bathhouses, bear in mind its specific function and confirm the current allocation of services in advance.
Routes by Duration and Starting Point
The Rota de S. João de Jerusalém is a circular route that starts in São Pedro do Sul. It is 12.7 kilometres long and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. The approximate duration helps you set aside time for the tour; the circular layout and distance also describe its form and length. The route follows the former Linha do Vouga railway line, now converted into the Ecopista do Vouga.
For the Rota do Vouga, the route description focuses on the river: it starts at the Termas de São Pedro do Sul and follows the Vouga and its riverbanks. The Rota do Castro do Banho starts on the left bank of the Vouga, near the Capela de São Martinho and the Balneário Termal Romano. The routes therefore differ, among other things, in their starting points and their stated connection to the river; the distance and approximate duration are also provided for the Rota de S. João de Jerusalém.
Landscape and Culture Along the Way
The Rota das Bétulas starts at Retiro da Fraguinha and leads to the summit of the Serra da Arada. The Rota da Cabra e do Lobo passes through a landscape featuring quartzite formations around 480 million years old, rare trees, waterfalls and trilobite trace fossils. The Rota de Manhouce has a different connection to the landscape: it passes through an area associated with the Iberian wolf and birds of prey. The routes thus offer different themes—from a summit destination to geological and natural features and the habitat described.
Archaeological and historical sites can also be included in your plans for exploring the area. The Dólmen do Juncal is in the Freguesia of Manhouce, in the Concelho of São Pedro do Sul. It can be reached via the CM1383, N227 and M612 roads and is at the end of the uphill road on the mountain. The named roads and its location at the top of the access road provide clear directions for your visit.
The Ponte de Manhouce was built by the Romans between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD. It was part of the Via Cale, the imperial road between Emérita Augusta (Mérida) and Bracara (Braga) via Viseu. This historical context makes the bridge a distinct point of interest alongside the routes and monuments: it tells the story of a Roman road connection, while the Dólmen is defined by its location and directions for reaching it.
