The PR4 Trilho do Rio and the historic village centre offer two different focal points for a stay in Fiães do Rio. The 21.8-kilometre route is a circular trail that starts and ends in the village. Other highlights include a very old wooden bridge over the Cávado, a particularly well-preserved village centre and places of remembrance associated with Bento Gonçalves. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether hiking or cultural heritage should take centre stage.

Hiking the PR4

The PR4 follows old shepherds’ paths and routes connecting villages. It runs partly within Peneda-Gerês National Park, so the route is not entirely inside the national park. Its circular layout, total distance and shared starting and finishing point in Fiães do Rio provide clear details for planning. Maintenance or weather may affect some sections, and trail conditions can change. Check the current conditions before setting out.

Bridge and Historic Routes

Fiães do Rio is home to a very old wooden bridge over the Cávado River. Its history also includes a former pilgrimage: groups from the north bank crossed the bridge to the Chapel of São Bartolomeu. This tradition is historical; the bridge does not automatically connect to a current pilgrimage event. Its construction and former use give the river crossing two distinct aspects: an old structure and a specific cultural tradition.

Bento Gonçalves and the Village Centre

Bento António Gonçalves was born in Fiães do Rio in 1902. The Casa de Bento Gonçalves is also located in the village and is listed as a place of interest. A granite monument is dedicated to Bento Gonçalves.

The older buildings also shape the cultural character of Fiães do Rio. The particularly well-preserved, probably older village centre is of great cultural and architectural value. Among the well-preserved old buildings is the communal oven, the “forno do povo”. The architectural story therefore ranges from the village as a whole to a single communal structure.

Landscape and Wildlife

Green fields and Lameiros meadows surround Fiães do Rio. The landscape also includes native oak forests and an agricultural mosaic. This mosaic of habitats supports a wide variety of animals, including rare and endangered species. The presence of individual species can vary seasonally. For nature lovers, this seasonal variation is an important part of the landscape, alongside the different habitats of forest, meadows and farmland. If you are particularly interested in wildlife watching, take seasonal variation into account when planning your trip.
