Friães brings together a rich history of milling, distinctive stone structures and a landscape of streams, cascades and old paths. You can explore the village from different perspectives: communal work at the mills, village architecture, or religious and festive traditions. The following impressions take you from the village’s history to its mill landscape and then on to its paths and waterways.

Village Culture and Architecture

In Friães, in Viade de Baixo, there is a stone oven. The Forno do Povo is built from solid stone slabs, not bricks or thatch. The rural cultural heritage also includes numerous Canastros, or grain stores. One spans the village’s main road from one side to the other.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde was completed in 1892. It is not clear from the historical record whether there were earlier church buildings. The procession for the Festa da Senhora da Saúde includes six flower-decorated biers. According to village records, the Ponte do Pondarado dates back to the 14th century.

Mills and Communal Work

The watermills are a testament to work organised communally: for many years, several families shared the mill-use times to have their grain ground. In the mid-20th century, there were around twenty mills along the Rio São Martinho in Friães. A visitor account dated 17 April 2023 counts 11 mills in the Friães group and 13 in the network with Bustelo. It describes many of the mills as being in poor condition. Check the condition of individual mills before making a firm plan to visit.

The figures relate to different periods and areas: around twenty refers to the mills along the river in the mid-20th century, 11 to the Friães mill group, and 13 to the network with Bustelo. They therefore do not form a simple time series.

Paths and Waterways

The Ponte dos Moinhos crosses the Rio de S. Martinho. The watercourse associated with the local route of 13 mills features cascades, rocky cliffs, deep pools and small lagoons. Water levels and access can vary; take this into account when planning to visit this part of the landscape.

The Trilho dos Moinhos D'Auga is a hiking trail in Friães. As Cunhas is an area of Friães with paths made of rough stone blocks and high side walls that separate the fields. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Friães, your travel plans can help you decide: the mills and architecture offer a cultural and historical focus, while the paths and river landscape offer a connection with the outdoors. Consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.
