The landscape around Cabril brings together a mosaic of wet meadows and agricultural fields, the waters of the Salamonde Reservoir and the granite massifs of the Serra do GerĂŞs. There are also trails with different time requirements and cultural sites covering subjects from murals to traditional olive processing. This allows you to give nature, activity and history different priorities when planning your trip.
Hiking trails with different time requirements
The PR9 MTR – Trilho dos Poços Verdes – Sete Lagoas starts and ends in the village of Xertelo, in the parish of Cabril, in the municipality of Montalegre. It passes through Peneda-Gerês National Park. The route is about 10.5 km long and takes approximately five hours. Both figures are estimates; local trail conditions may vary. Check conditions before setting out, and allow extra time for breaks in your day’s plans. This is therefore a hike lasting several hours, for which you should set aside a suitably large block of time.
Another trail starts at Largo do Carvalhal: signposted, it follows forest and footpaths to a waterfall in about 30 minutes. This time refers to the walk to the destination; allow extra time for the return journey. These two time estimates provide a practical guide for different plans: a hike lasting several hours through the national park or a shorter walk to a waterfall.
Murals and historical traces
The Caminho Cultural de Cabril is a walking route featuring murals in the parish of Cabril. Eight bus stops and a water reservoir were used as canvases for the project. The images depict Cabril’s customs and traditions. Both the subject and the format are central: the traditions are the focus, while the bus stops and reservoir serve as the canvases.
The Fojo do Lobo de Xertelo was restored to preserve the memory of the historic conflict between people and wolves. The historic Moinho Cubo Vertical mill was restored to safeguard the heritage of the past. The Lagar de PincĂŁes retains its essential original mechanisms and is an example of an old communal olive oil mill. Together, these sites tell a story that moves from the traditional account of people and wolves, through the preservation of a historic mill, to the mechanisms of a communal olive oil mill.
The relocation of the parish church of São Lourenço de Cabril also has a precisely dated history: it was approved on 23 June 1755, moving it from São Lourenço to Outeiro do Lugar da Vila, entered in the General Register of the Archdiocese of Braga on 26 June 1755, and subsequently completed. The two June dates refer to the approval and the register entry; the relocation was completed later.
Olive processing in PincĂŁes
Traditionally, olives were harvested and processed in PincĂŁes in December and January. This seasonal detail adds the agricultural calendar to the history of the Lagar: the olive mill represents communal processing, while the two winter months mark the traditional time for harvesting and processing. For travelers interested in regional agriculture and cultural history, both the technical heritage and the traditional season are part of the picture of PincĂŁes.
