The PR2 – Trilho das Azenhas do Coura starts at the medieval bridge in Vilar de Mouros and follows a circular route past four watermills. Rural technology and cultural heritage meet along this route; the church, the Cruzeiro Paroquial and the CA Vilar de Mouros Festival reveal other, distinct sides of the area. For planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a trail, historic buildings and a recurring music event as clearly distinct highlights.
Circular trail, mills and time outdoors
The four watermills along the PR2 are considered examples of traditional hydraulic technology and rural cultural heritage. As watermills, they illustrate the use of water as a source of mechanical power. Wildlife is also part of the trail experience: species observed there include otters, whose presence can vary seasonally. You should therefore not plan on seeing an otter as a guaranteed experience.
The picnic park at Largo Dr. AntĂłnio Barge offers another place to stop. It is on the left bank of the Coura and is equipped with tables, benches and barbecue areas. This gives you a choice between a trail with a focus on nature and technology and a specific place equipped for picnics, catering to different interests.
Architecture and cultural heritage
The Igreja Paroquial de Vilar de Mouros is defined by its precise dimensions: the rectangular nave measures 21 Ă— 7 metres, while the square chancel measures 6 Ă— 6 metres. The nave is therefore three times as long as it is wide, while the chancel has a square floor plan. These different shapes give the architecture a clearly discernible structure.
The depiction and structure of the Cruzeiro Paroquial go hand in hand. The double-sided cross shows Christ on one side and Our Lady of Sorrows on the other. It has a round shaft, rests on a granite block and stands on five steps. Both the imagery and the material and base are therefore part of the description of this religious monument; it dates from the 17th century.
The Ponte de Vilar de Mouros can also be identified by its form: it has three slightly pointed arches, with the central one larger than the other two. The bridge has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. The structures can therefore be compared by different features: the church by its dimensions, the Cruzeiro by its depiction and structure, and the bridge by its arches and monument status.
The history of transport in the area also includes a medieval road that crossed the river near Vilar de Mouros and connected Caminha with Valença and the Galician border. It offers another perspective on the area's history, alongside its religious buildings and bridge.
The Oficina Fontes adds the history of agricultural equipment manufacturing to this picture. Among other things, the workshop produced seed drills and hoes, which were sold both inland and in Galicia. The buildings date from the 18th century; the workshop is now inactive. The stated sales areas show that sales were not limited to the place of manufacture.
Musical history and trip planning
Vilar de Mouros hosts the CA Vilar de Mouros Festival, described as the oldest music festival on the Iberian Peninsula. Each year, the festival renews the region's connection with culture. If your trip is planned around this event, check the dates for your preferred travel period.
When searching for a holiday rental, it helps to decide on the purpose of your trip first: the trail and mills form a cohesive theme of routes and technology, while the church, Cruzeiro, bridge and Oficina Fontes offer different ways to explore architecture and history. The festival, by contrast, is a date-dependent highlight.
