Vila Praia de Âncora combines a clearly defined stretch of coast with archaeological sites, historic architecture, and a route for pedestrians and cyclists. The beach extends from the fishing harbor to the mouth of the Âncora; Portinho has infrastructure for recreational boating. This offers different options when choosing a stay in Ancora: the coast, architectural and settlement history, or the Ecovia do Atlântico. You can decide in advance which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Coast and routes by the water
The beach at Vila Praia de Âncora extends from the fishing harbor to the mouth of the Âncora. A footbridge crosses the river mouth near the tourist office and Forte da Lagarteira. This makes it possible to distinguish the beach and the river crossing as separate landmarks by the water. Portinho de Vila Praia de Âncora has infrastructure for recreational boating.
On foot and by bike
The Ecovia do Atlântico connects Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora via walking and cycling paths. Its Camboas section runs through Vila Praia de Âncora and ends shortly before Forte da Lagarteira. The distinction is useful when choosing a route: the first description refers to a connection between places, while the second describes the course of a local section.
Archaeology and architectural history
Anta da Barrosa in Vila Praia de Âncora is classified as a National Monument. It consists of a polygonal burial chamber with eight supporting stones and an entrance corridor about 1.5 meters wide and 6 meters long. At the time of its classification, it was considered the largest and best-preserved megalithic monument recorded in the Âncora Valley to that date.
Another archaeological perspective is offered by the hilltop settlement of Cividade de Âncora/Afife. It was originally established in the Late Iron Age and resettled during the Roman period; it was inhabited at least until the 1st century AD. In contrast to the Anta, whose description focuses on its chamber and entrance, the Cividade is notable for the sequence of its establishment and resettlement.
Forte da Lagarteira has an irregular star-shaped ground plan with four bastions and a three-sided battery facing the river. In contrast to the Anta, whose description centers on its chamber and entrance corridor, the Forte offers an architectural perspective on a fortification.
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Bonança
The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Bonança takes place in Vila Praia de Âncora on the second weekend of September. The exact dates may vary from year to year. The Festa includes a maritime procession with festively decorated boats; details may vary by edition. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year. The procession gives the festival a maritime focus and distinguishes it as a reason to travel from the archaeological and architectural themes.
