A medieval tower and a museum share the same location in Caminha: the Torre do Relógio is the only surviving tower of the medieval city walls and houses the Núcleo Museológico do Centro Histórico de Caminha. The museum opened in 2008. Here, the history of the city’s fortifications and the interpretation of its historic centre come together in one building.

Churches, Fortresses and Bridges

Two churches also offer different insights into Caminha’s history. The Igreja Matriz de Caminha has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. The Igreja da Misericórdia de Caminha dates from the 16th century and is a Renaissance church. At the Capela de São Pedro de Varais, the focus is on its decoration: it contains fresco panels from the first half of the 16th century, which were restored in 1999.

On the coast, the Forte da Ínsua stands on a rocky island about 200 metres offshore, opposite Praia de Moledo. The fort contains a Franciscan convent, which was expanded in 1676. The Forte da Lagarteira has a different form: the fortress is star-shaped, with four lateral bastions and a three-sided battery facing the river. At the Ponte de Vilar de Mouros, it is the three arches that define the structure; the middle one is larger than the other two. The bridge remains in use as a crossing and forms part of the Estrada Nacional 301. Its current function and protected architecture are equally important to its significance.

Archaeology and the Serra de Arga

The Anta da Barrosa was classified as a National Monument in 1910. The Cividade de Âncora takes you further back in time: this hillfort dates from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and also contains remains of Roman settlement. You can see some of the archaeological finds from the Cividade at the Museu Municipal de Caminha. These sites reveal traces from different periods, from the prehistoric monument to Roman remains.

The fresco panels in the Capela de São Pedro de Varais also offer a concrete insight into the region’s art history. The Mosteiro de São João de Arga offers a different perspective: set in the Serra de Arga, it affords sweeping views over the River Minho. The Centro de Interpretação da Serra d’Arga complements this landscape with interpretive walking trails, environmental education workshops and local products.

Pilgrimage Traditions and Experiences on the Water

The Caminho Português da Costa, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, passes through Caminha. The Romaria de São João d'Arga also takes place every year at the end of August. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the exact dates before setting off. In Caminha, pilgrimage traditions can be experienced both as a route through the town and as a recurring celebration.

The coastal waterscapes vary considerably. Praia de Moledo is known for its strong waves and offers good conditions for surfing and windsurfing. Praia de Caminha / Foz do Minho combines a sandy beach exposed to the open sea with calmer river waters. These waters are suitable for children, as well as for sailing and windsurfing. Conditions at both beaches vary by season and weather.

The local cuisine also reflects the different character of the Concelho de Caminha. Cabrito à Serra d'Arga and Cabrito à S. Pedro de Varais are considered typical inland dishes. The cuisine of the coastal parishes features fresh fish from the sea and rivers. For those looking for activities as well as cultural and scenic experiences, Portinho de Vila Praia de Âncora has facilities for recreational boating. Quinta de Chelo offers horseback rides through Vilar de Mouros for people with or without riding experience; a first riding experience is also available for young children.
