A stay in Santo António Da Charneca can focus on local history and nature. The town brings together a church building, the founding of an association and archaeological evidence; Mata Nacional da Machada adds a landscape of its own. For planning, it helps to make a clear choice: would you like to explore architectural and ceramics history or set aside time for the mata? These priorities can also guide your search for a holiday rental for your stay.

Local History and Ceramics

Igreja de Santo António da Charneca was built between 1951 and 1964. Sociedade Filarmónica União Agrícola 1º de Dezembro was founded in Santo António Da Charneca in 1898. The dated topics therefore range from a founding in the late 19th century to a church building in the mid-20th century. Two distinct historical points of reference stand side by side: the founding of the association and the building history of the church.

An older historical trace is found in tile production. The first reported archaeological evidence of tile production in Portugal was discovered in Santo António Da Charneca, in a pottery kiln dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. The find connects the town’s name with a specific craft activity and a clearly dated period; it predates the founding of the association and the construction of the church.

The Centro de Educação Ambiental da Mata Nacional da Machada e do Sapal do Rio Coina (CICAMM) offers visitors an exhibition about how the pottery workshop that occupied the archaeological site operated. The centre also serves as a starting point for exploring Mata Nacional da Machada. As exhibition details may change, check the current offering before visiting.

Mata Nacional da Machada

Mata Nacional da Machada lies between Coina, Palhais and Santo António Da Charneca. It covers about 385.7 hectares and is subject to a forestry regime. The area figure gives a sense of the extent of the woodland, while the forestry regime describes how it is managed.

The mata has a picnic area and several fountains. Its roads and paths are often used for sporting activities. This gives you two different ways to plan your visit: spending time at the picnic area or using the paths for sport. The facilities and use of the paths are part of the same woodland, but they offer different ways to make the mata the focus of your visit.

Guided Tours and Visit Planning

From May to September, CICAMM offers guided tours for groups of at least five and no more than 15 people, by prior arrangement. If a guided tour is important to your trip, check current availability in advance and take the group size into account when planning. A walking tour of some of the oldest buildings and historical sites also took place on 3 August 2024, offering a guided look at local history.
