Coina brings together tangible evidence of its production history with the wetland of the Sapal do Rio Coina and its birdwatching. The glassworks, mill and lime kilns offer different historical connections; the Sapal provides a focus on nature. Examples of events add to these perspectives, each with its own date and format.

Glassworks, Mill and Lime Kilns

At the Campo Arqueológico de Coina, King João V had the Real Fábrica de Vidros Cristalinos de Coina built as an important royal manufactory. The royal commission gives glassmaking a specific historical context and places it within Coina’s history.

The Moinho de Maré de Coina was built in the 15th or 16th century and has five millstones. Its date spans two possible centuries; the number of millstones provides a specific technical feature. The building thus brings together its historical period and technical features as two distinct perspectives.

The start of construction of Coina’s lime kilns is dated more precisely: work began on 4 February 1864. The complex originally consisted of four kilns. Compared with the mill’s broader date range, this gives a clear chronological contrast: the mill is dated to the 15th or 16th century, while work on the lime kilns began in 1864. The figures describe different things: five millstones at the Moinho and four kilns in the original lime-kiln complex.

Sapal do Rio Coina and Birdwatching

The Sapal do Rio Coina offers a different focus: the wetland covers 160 hectares and lies within the local nature reserve. Birdwatching in particular shapes how visitors can experience this landscape. This nature-based theme is clearly distinct from the historic production sites: the focus here is on observing birds, rather than understanding buildings and their technical features.

Guided visits to the Sapal can be arranged with the technical and expert team at the CEA Centro de Educação Ambiental da Mata Nacional da Machada e do Sapal do Rio Coina.

Events with Different Focuses

Events also offer a variety of highlights. For the 21st edition of the Subida do Rio Coina in September 2026, river explorations in traditional boats, kayaks or participants’ own watercraft were planned. Dates and registration details apply to each specific edition, so plan according to the information for the particular event date.

The 2025 programme for the seventh Feira Quinhentista de Coina included stalls, arts and crafts, food and period-themed performances. This mix brings together market and craft offerings with food and performances; the programme may change from one edition to the next. A guided tour of historic Coina offered by the municipality had its meeting point at the Pelourinho de Coina on 23 May 2026.

The three formats therefore have different focuses: the Subida is about exploring the river, the Feira brings together stalls, crafts, food and performances, and the guided tour focuses on historic Coina. If you would like to include an event in your stay, check the date, registration details and programme for the specific edition.
