Barreiro can be explored through a range of very different themes: the biodiverse Sapal do Rio Coina wetland, historic mills, places of remembrance and trips on the water. This helps you choose the focus of your stay according to your own interests, rather than reducing the city to a single attraction. Nature observation, architectural and technological history, and personal first-hand accounts each offer a distinct perspective.
Wetland and birdwatching
The Sapal do Rio Coina is a 160-hectare biodiverse wetland that forms part of the local nature reserve. The area is known for birdwatching activities. The specific area size and the opportunity to watch birds together make the Sapal's natural character tangible. For travelers who want to include nature observation in their plans, it is a clearly defined focus in Barreiro.
Mills from different centuries
The Moinho de Maré Pequeno – Centro Interpretativo was built in the 17th century and had three pairs of millstones. The Moinho de vento do Jim windmill was built in 1827 in the Dutch style. Three windmills were built in Alburrica in 1852. The eastern mill, Moinho de Vento Nascente, was fully restored in 2018. Together, these details show different types of mills and their histories: from the construction date and former equipment of the tide mill to the Dutch style and the restoration of a windmill. The timeline thus ranges from a 17th-century building through 19th-century windmills to a restoration in 2018. If you plan to visit the Moinho de Maré Pequeno, please check its visiting hours in advance.
Remembrance, crafts and architectural history
Espaço Memória opened to the public on June 28, 2014. Its FHORAL collection includes accessible interviews that serve as first-hand eyewitness accounts of Barreiro's history. This perspective through personal accounts complements the mills' architectural and technological themes with individual memories.
At CICAMM – Centro de Interpretação do Campo Arqueológico da Mata da Machada, an exhibition offers insight into how the pottery workshop at this archaeological site operated. Igreja de Santa Maria do Barreiro was built in the second half of the 20th century. An older landmark in transport and architectural history is Barreiro's new railway and river station: it was inaugurated on October 4, 1884, and designed by the engineer Miguel Pais. The different dates help distinguish the historic sites and themes from one another in time.
Trips and activities on the water
The traditional Muleta Álvaro Velho makes trips on the Tagus and Coina rivers. Departures are from Pontão de São Marcos, at Barreiro's road, rail and river terminal. If you are considering a trip, check in advance when sailings are available. This lets you plan the activity around the actual sailing times without tying it to a fixed schedule for your entire stay.
Praia do Clube Naval also offers another specific connection to the water: it stretches as far as Bico do Mexilhoeiro, where a beach soccer facility has been set up. The mills, wetland, places of remembrance and activities on the water offer different focuses for a trip to Barreiro. When planning, choose which of these themes matters most to you.
