A small, steep island in the middle reaches of the Tagus is home to Castelo de Almourol. This medieval military monument is associated with the Reconquista; its location on the island brings the castle and the river together. In Vila Nova Da Barquinha, the cultural range extends from this historical theme to churches and contemporary sculpture, as well as archaeology and interactive science. The different places offer a variety of ways to explore: you can focus on medieval history, view sacred art or discover the educational offerings.
Castle Island and Paths along the Tagus
Castelo de Almourol combines a medieval military monument with a striking location on a steep river island. Boats depart from the landing stage beside the castle for Castelo every 20 minutes. The admission price also includes a visit to the Centro de Interpretação Templário de Almourol. Check the current timetable and admission conditions before your visit, as intervals and ticketing arrangements may change.
The Trilho Panorâmico do Tejo offers a different way to experience the Tagus: the route can be used year-round on foot or by bicycle. Along the entire route, there are boardwalks, handrails, viewpoints and rest areas. This makes it suitable for both walks and bike rides; the viewpoints and rest areas complement the route’s infrastructure with places to pause. As the condition of the infrastructure may change, it is advisable to check it before setting off.
Sculptures in Barquinha Parque
The sculptures of the Parque de Escultura Contemporânea Almourol are spread across seven hectares of Barquinha Parque. The park brings together leading names in contemporary Portuguese sculpture. The grounds also include an exhibition gallery, riverside paths and children’s play areas. Art, riverside walks and play offer different focal points, without limiting visitors to just one way of exploring. Those interested in modern Portuguese sculpture will find a distinctive subject here alongside the medieval and ecclesiastical sights.
Churches and Their Works of Art
The Igreja Matriz da Atalaia was founded or rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century by D. Pedro de Meneses, Lord of Cantanhede. In Tancos, the Igreja da Misericórdia offers a later historical point of reference: it was completed in 1585. Its interior features include tilework and a Mannerist altarpiece with paintings by Simão Rodrigues. The comparison leads from a building history with two possible beginnings to a precisely dated completion and specifically identifiable artistic features.
Visits to the Igreja Matriz da Atalaia were available on Friday mornings by prior arrangement through the Vila Nova da Barquinha tourist office. Before making plans, check current visiting hours and access conditions with the tourist office.
Archaeology and Interactive Science
The Centro de Interpretação de Arqueologia do Alto Ribatejo presents the archaeological finds of northern Ribatejo in a permanent exhibition. It is the only infrastructure of its kind in Portugal. The permanent exhibition and its distinctive institutional status make archaeology a dedicated focus of discovery in Vila Nova Da Barquinha.
The Centro Integrado de Educação em Ciências is organized differently: its six themed areas contain interactive modules on local history and culture. They are called “Embarca com a Ciência”, “Explorando o Castelo”, “Explorando a Barquinha”, “Explorando o Tejo”, “Explorando o Voo” and “Espaço Maker - TINK”. Their titles range from the castle and the town to the Tagus, flying and the maker space. These interactive themed modules offer a different way to explore history, culture and knowledge alongside the permanent archaeological exhibition.
