The rice fields along the banks of the Ribeira de Ulme stream are among the most distinctive landscapes in the municipality of Chamusca. Churches, historic buildings and paths also tell the story of the place and its architecture. Exploring Chamusca means discovering its landscape and cultural heritage as two sides of the same experience, from a walk around the town to the municipality’s riverfront and open spaces.

Churches, places of remembrance and architecture

The Circuito Pedonal da Terra Branca is a tourist walking route through Chamusca that showcases the town’s historic and architectural wealth. Among its most notable buildings is the Igreja São Pedro. Dating from the 17th century, it is the only church in the municipality to have retained its original structure. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores offers a different perspective: a private individual had it built in 1753. Inside are gilded wood carvings and a depiction of Nossa Senhora da Piedade e das Sete Dores, known as the Pietà.

Smaller religious and public landmarks also invite a closer look. The Ermida do Senhor do Bonfim houses ex-votos offered by worshippers for miracles attributed to Senhor do Bonfim. The Chafariz Branca de Neve is also known as Fonte do Largo 25 de Abril. It owes its popular name to seven small fountains in the town, representing the seven dwarfs.

Casa do Moscadim is an important historic manor house in Chamusca, with a remarkable tile collection inside. During the third French invasion, Marshal William Beresford, marshal of the Portuguese-British army, established his headquarters there. For a visit, check dates and ticket availability in the online ticket shop. Casa Museu Dr. Rafael Duque is one of three museological centres at the foundation’s headquarters.

Riverside landscapes and trails

The Dique Nossa Senhora das Dores offers a view of Chamusca. It also protects Terra Branca from flooding. Porto das Mulheres was once a river port and is now considered a place to relax by the river, with an extensive sandy area. In Parque Municipal, you’ll find various tropical plants as well as spaces for leisure and recreation.

For a different perspective on the landscape, the Circuito da Charneca Ribatejana runs through the Charneca Ribatejana. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for photos along the way. Check the current trail conditions before setting out. The walk through Chamusca also has a clear architectural focus, so the two routes explore different themes rather than offering the same kind of experience.

Festivals and local experiences

The Semana da Ascensão is one of Chamusca’s notable traditional festivals, alongside the town’s bullfights. A bullfight takes place in the Praça de Touros on Thursday of Ascension week. If you’re interested in this tradition, you can factor the date into your plans. In Ulme, painted murals add colour to walks through the village, combining a route around the town with a cultural highlight.

In Parreira, the Festival do Cogumelo da Parreira celebrates a local mushroom product. Held annually in March, the gastronomic festival showcases local flavours and the Freguesia’s traditional knowledge. Another historic landmark in the Freguesia, the Moinho de Água da Parreira is a watermill with a history of its own. At Casal da Vinha, picking blueberries is one of the countryside activities on offer. As seasonal availability may change, it’s best to check before your trip.
