Fishing as a Living Tradition

Praia de Angeiras is a testament to Lavra’s long fishing tradition, which remains visible today: artisanal fishing is still practised at the fishing centre. At Portinho de Angeiras, a 488-metre-long breakwater is intended to make it safer for boats to enter and leave. The Mercado Municipal de Angeiras sells fresh fish directly from the fishing boats. Here, alongside the history of fishing, you can encounter current fishing activity and a local way of selling the catch.

River, Beach and Dunes

Lavra includes woodland and dune areas considered particularly valuable for their ecological importance. Praia de Angeiras Norte is surrounded by dunes. The Rio Onda also shapes the local landscape: it forms the natural boundary between Labruge, which belongs to the municipality of Vila do Conde, and Lavra in the municipality of Matosinhos. The river flows into the sea at Praia de Angeiras. Nearby, a bridge connects Praia de Angeiras with Labruge; the crossing passes through the landscape and flora along the Rio Onda.

Architecture from Different Periods

The first recorded mention of the Igreja de Lavra dates back to 1286. The present building was completed in 1758, after the previous church was demolished in 1721. Its architecture is shaped by features of the Joanine Baroque. The Obelisco da Memória also commemorates an event that took place in a different year from its completion: the monument recalls the landing of D. Pedro IV with the liberal troops in 1832, but was not completed until 1864.

The Bairro SAAL at Praia de Angeiras tells another architectural and social story. The housing complex was built after 25 April; the project began in 1977 and was completed in two phases. The first phase saw the construction of 90 homes, followed by another 31 in the second. The buildings are functionally designed, arranged in a grid and organised as single-storey modules. The complex’s clear layout and its division into two construction phases are still evident today.

Craft and Memory in Angeiras

The Casa do Mar e Tanques Romanos in Angeiras is a museum space dedicated to artisanal fishing, housed in a former Casa do Mar on Angeiras beach. In these buildings, the “moços de mar” stored boats and equipment used for fishing and for gathering Sargassum seaweed and Pilado crabs. The Roman fish-salting tanks add an older historical layer to this story: the site includes 16 replicas of the original tanks. These original tanks were carved into the rock and are now covered by beach sand.

Everyday History in the School Collection

The main foyer of the Museu da Escola EB2,3 de Lavra houses an ethnographic collection. Objects and tools illustrate the customs and ways of life of Lavra’s population, as well as traditional farming, fishing and linen production. The period represented runs from Roman times to the mid-20th century. The collection thus covers both subjects rooted in the distant past and aspects of life that continued into more recent history.

A Short Cycling Route with Clear Endpoints

The 970-metre cycle path in Lavra runs from the roundabout on Rua da Cruz to the junction with Avenida da Praia de Angeiras, passing alongside the Roman tanks. As route conditions can change, it is worth checking the current route before setting off.
