When planning a trip to Lavra, you can choose to focus on its coastal landscape or local history. At Praia do Funtão and Praia de Angeiras Norte, the shape of the beach, dunes and sports facilities offer different ways to experience the coast; fishing and architectural landmarks provide further points of interest.

Beaches and sports facilities

Praia do Funtão lies opposite the town of Lavra. Its wide sandy beach has few rocks; there are also areas for beach volleyball. These may be supervised seasonally. If you plan your visit around the sports facilities, check their current status.

At Praia de Angeiras Norte, dunes surround the beach, which has extensive infrastructure and facilities for various sports. This makes it possible to compare the two beaches based on specific features: Funtão is known for its wide stretch of sand and few rocks, while Angeiras Norte has dunes and sports infrastructure.

Fishing and local markets

Fishing offers a distinct way to explore Angeiras. Artisanal fishing continues at Núcleo Piscatório da Praia de Angeiras. At Mercado Municipal de Angeiras, the focus is on selling fresh fish, caught directly from the boats. The 488-metre-long breakwater at Portinho de Angeiras adds a precise architectural measurement to this picture of maritime infrastructure.

Architectural history and places of remembrance

The history of Igreja do Divino Salvador de Lavra can be traced through two dates: the original church was demolished in 1721, and the present church was completed in 1758. It features characteristics of Joanine Baroque architecture and continues to serve as a venue for parish celebrations. Times may vary if you would like to include a celebration in your plans.

Obelisco da Memória commemorates the landing of D. Pedro IV in 1832 with liberal troops who came from the Azores. The monument also stands on the boundary between the Freguesia de Lavra and the Freguesia de Perafita. This site brings together a precisely dated historical reference and a clearly identified location.

Another architectural example is Bairro SAAL – Praia de Angeiras. Its functional architecture is laid out in a grid of single-storey modules with courtyards; the pitched roofs slope inward. Museu Etnográfico da Escola E.B. 2,3 Dr. José Domingues dos Santos is another of Lavra’s historical attractions: it contains ethnographic objects relating to the Freguesia de Lavra and its history.

For views of the landscape and its connections, the bridge between Praia de Angeiras and Labruge is another specific point of interest. It is integrated into the local landscape and flora along the Rio Onda. The Festa da Sardinha takes place at Praia de Angeiras on the first Saturday in July; check the dates for your travel year.
