In Vila do Conde, two threads run through the town’s history: its coastal landscape and a craft tradition dating back at least to the 16th century. On the PR3 Castro de São Paio route, you’ll encounter the remains of a pre-Christian maritime settlement; at the Museu das Rendas de Bilros, traditional and contemporary lace take centre stage. Exploring here takes you from the coast to an art that has been practised across generations.

Coastal landscapes and traces of early settlements

The sandy Praia de Vila do Conde stretches for around six kilometres, almost uninterrupted, to the mouth of the Rio Ave. The PR3 Castro de São Paio route also follows the coast: it starts at the Centro de Interpretação do Castro de São Paio and leads to the remains of a pre-Christian maritime settlement. Along the way, it crosses both the Paisagem Protegida Regional do Litoral de Vila do Conde and the Reserva Ornitológica de Mindelo.

These two protected areas encompass a wide variety of landscape features: dunes, beaches, waterways and wetlands, as well as forests, farmland and rocky outcrops. Their heritage includes biological, geological, archaeological and cultural aspects. The CMIA Vila do Conde offers guided walks in the intertidal zone, along the coast and through the protected landscape; exhibitions and environmental education workshops round out the programme. Praia Azul is described as the beach most sought after by surfers in Vila do Conde.

Lace art and convent sweets

Rendas de Bilros, Vila do Conde’s bobbin lace, is another defining discovery. Its production dates back at least to the 16th century. The permanent exhibition at the Museu das Rendas de Bilros features both traditional lace from Vila do Conde and contemporary work. During demonstrations, visitors can watch lacemakers at work; the museum also has a school where this technique is taught. Here, the history of the craft meets the passing on of its skills.

Another long-standing tradition connects Vila do Conde with convent sweets associated with the convents of Santa Clara and Vairão. Convent specialities include Beijos de Freira, Melindres, Pastéis de Santa Clara, Rebuçados de Ovos, Rosquinhas, Sapatetas and Sopa Dourada. Rosca de pão doce, also known as Rosca de folar de Páscoa, is part of the local sweet-making tradition, too. It remains rooted in Labruge, Mindelo, Modivas, Vila Chã and Vilar.

Churches, collections and maritime history

The construction history of the Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde received an important impetus in 1502, when King Manuel visited Vila do Conde. A different long building history can be seen at the Igreja do Convento de Santa Clara e Túmulos dos Fundadores. Work on this religious monument began in 1318, and it features Gothic, Manueline, Baroque and Rococo elements. A founders’ chapel contains Manueline tombs and a Rococo organ.

The permanent exhibition at the Museu de Vila do Conde devotes 19 rooms to the area’s history. It takes visitors through periods of time beginning around 200,000 years ago. Another chapter of local history unfolds on the riverbank: the Alfândega Régia – Museu de Construção Naval is housed in a 15th-century building. Since 2007, a replica of a 16th-century carrack has been moored on the Rio Ave. The Casa do Barco features the permanent exhibition “Com o risco se faz um barco”.

The Casa de José Régio also preserves a personal part of the town’s history: after retiring, the poet chose the residence as his home. It opened to the public on 17 September 1975. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00. Check the hours before your visit, as they may change. The Museu dos Bombeiros focuses on a different subject: its collection includes historic fire engines, uniforms, pennants, photographs and documents relating to the history of Vila do Conde’s fire brigade.

Festivals and routes to Santiago

The Procissão de São João is one of the highlights of the religious patron saint celebrations. Held on the birthday of John the Baptist, it passes through the main streets of the historic centre. Two pilgrimage routes to Santiago cross the Concelho de Vila do Conde. Together with the coastal route and the collections, they offer another perspective on the town: its history can be explored through religious traditions, maritime traces and craftsmanship.
