The Atoleiros–Sulfúrea Ecopista connects two distinct points of interest in Fronteira: it was created by repurposing a former railway line within the municipality and is also part of the Camino de Santiago route. Churches, a former entrance to the fortified settlement and prehistoric traces lead to other layers of history. The surrounding landscapes and events provide additional reasons to visit.

Route connections and events

The Ecopista offers a different point of interest from the architectural monuments when choosing a destination: its history spans the former railway line and its place on the Camino de Santiago route. Visitors interested in routes and historical connections can weigh this alongside church architecture and archaeological sites. This makes it possible to explore Fronteira through different themes without reducing it to a single focus.

One sporting event is the 24 Horas TT Vila de Fronteira, a demanding off-road endurance competition held at the TerrĂłdromo de Fronteira. The traditional Festas de VerĂŁo honour Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha. If an event determines your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance.

Churches, archway and local history

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in the 16th century at the behest of King D. SebastiĂŁo and completed in 1599 by D. Lucas de Portugal. Three vaulted naves of equal height divide the interior; the main altar is made entirely of marble. The church thus combines a clearly defined architectural history with specific details of its design.

The Arco dos Santos is a pointed-arch opening dating from the 14th century that marked a former entrance to Fronteira’s fortified settlement. The Capela do Arco dos Santos was built above the former Porta dos Santos and has existed since at least 1695. The archway and the chapel therefore represent different historical points of reference: one a former entrance to the settlement, the other a building that has stood since at least the late 17th century.

Fronteira’s history also includes its foundation, attributed to King D. Dinis; ruins remain of the former Castelo de Fronteira. The former Fronteira railway station features tile panels by Leopoldo Battistini depicting scenes of rural life. The exhibition at the Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Atoleiros comprises four sections. Together, these places offer different ways to explore architectural history, artistic design and the interpretation of history.

Prehistoric traces and landscape

The megalithic necropolis at Herdade Grande comprises approximately 30 dolmens and is associated with human settlement in Fronteira. The rock engravings at Herdade dos Pintos offer a different kind of prehistoric trace: they too are evidence of human settlement associated with Fronteira. The two sites therefore draw attention to different types of surviving traces.

Nearby is the Centro EcoturĂstico da Ribeira Grande, with a large watercourse and green landscapes that include areas of significant biodiversity. The area is often used for recreation. This natural setting differs from the historic buildings and archaeological sites, adding landscape and biodiversity to the range of possible themes.

If you’re looking for hotels in Fronteira, first decide what you want your trip to focus on: architectural history, the Ecopista’s route connection, prehistoric traces, the nearby landscape or an event date.
