A pointed arch dating from the 14th century marked one of the former entrances to Fronteira’s fortified town centre. The Arco dos Santos brings this historical function to life in a specific structure. The Pelourinho de Fronteira marks a different moment in time: it was erected after King D. Manuel granted Fronteira town status in 1512. The two structures lead to different moments in the town’s history—from the fortified centre of the 14th century to the period after town status was granted. Fronteira lies on the left bank of the River Avis.
Traces of the battle and its architecture
The Battle of Atoleiros took place on 6 April 1384. The Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Atoleiros uses an audio guide, complemented by sets, films, audiovisual content and multimedia. Four visitor areas give the centre a clear layout: O Atelier do Pintor, O Panorama da Batalha de Atoleiros, A Câmara Obscura and O Laboratório de Fotografia. The combination of an audio guide and other media directs attention beyond the historical date to different ways of presenting the story. The Terreiro da Batalha de Atoleiros was classified as a National Monument in 2023.
Church architecture also offers specific markers in time. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in the 16th century at the behest of King D. Sebastião and completed in 1599. Its interior is divided into three vaulted naves with five bays of equal height. The Igreja da Misericórdia makes a different architectural statement: completed in 1583, it features decorative and architectural elements of the Baroque. The former Casas da Câmara de Fronteira were probably built in the 16th century. A square granite tower in Fronteira stands 24 metres tall.
A different townscape in Cabeço de Vide
In the Centro Histórico de Cabeço de Vide, the former town hall, clock tower, pillory, old prison, parish church and fortress come together in an almost perfect circle. This circular layout makes the historic centre legible as a spatial ensemble. Largo da Cadeia, also known as Largo do Pelourinho, offers expansive views south and west across a broad horizon. In Cabeço de Vide, a clearly defined historic town layout and a viewpoint with precisely specified directions of view stand side by side as distinct discoveries.
Bridge, biodiversity and seasonal water
The Centro EcoturĂstico da Ribeira Grande offers a landscape perspective. A granite bridge with ten semicircular arches stands there, and the area also has significant biodiversity zones. The bridge gives this nature-focused setting a distinctive built form, while the biodiversity zones draw attention to its ecological side. During the summer months, the uncovered municipal swimming pools complement the Centro EcoturĂstico da Ribeira Grande. This seasonal addition distinguishes the pools from the built and landscape features described as permanent.
The Ecopista Atoleiros–Sulfúrea also reflects a change in infrastructure: the municipality converted the former railway corridor for this purpose. The Termas da Sulfúrea was established as a thermal spa in 1855. Together, these places show different facets of the destination—from historic structures and events to landscape and infrastructure.
