In the Centro Histórico de Cabeço de Vide, the old town hall, Torre do Relógio, Pelourinho, old prison, Igreja Matriz and fortress stand in an almost perfect circle. The historic centre, Termas da Sulfúrea and the Ecopistas represent different facets of Cabeço de Vide.

Squares, Churches and Monuments

Largo da Cadeia, also known as Largo do Pelourinho, is considered a National Monument and opens up a wide horizon to the south and west. Cruzeiro de Cabeço de Vide, also called Cruzeiro do Espírito Santo, is likewise classified as a National Monument. The cross monument dates from the 16th century.

Igreja Matriz de Cabeço de Vide is generously proportioned, with two naves: a main nave and a side nave. Its main structure apparently dates from the 16th century; the richly carved main altar is in the Baroque style of the 17th century. Thus, two distinct periods come together in the church.

Igreja do Espírito Santo was completely rebuilt in the mid-16th century to a Manueline design with Mudéjar influences. Together with Igreja Matriz, it illustrates two distinct architectural references from the 16th century: a main structure that apparently dates from that period, and a comprehensive reconstruction to a specific design.

Castle and Archaeological History

Castelo de Cabeço de Vide was probably built as a medieval castle in the 14th century. The entrance portal, which faces south, bears the emblem of the Ordem de Avis. Inside, residential structures, a cistern, a well and several silos have been preserved. They apparently point to late medieval use in the 15th and 16th centuries. The presumed construction date and evidence of later use are two distinct statements about its chronology.

Villa Romana Horta da Torre also offers a glimpse into architectural history. A large room with a double apse and a stibadium arranged above it was used to welcome guests in a magnificent setting. The owner received his guests there. This grand reception room adds to the themes of the castle, churches and heritage conservation.

Termas da Sulfúrea and Outdoor Activities

Termas da Sulfúrea lie in the valley of Ribeira da Vide, about one kilometre southeast of Cabeço de Vide. The surroundings invite visitors to go for walks and enjoy outdoor activities. Their location gives the thermal spa a distinct place in trip planning, alongside the town’s historic buildings.

Facilities at the Termas include indoor pools, cooling areas, a gym, a spa, a bar or cafeteria, and an uncovered inner courtyard. The thermal water is sulphurous, oxidrilous and hyp-saline. The full physico-chemical analysis is dated 9 May 2019.

Ecopistas and Station Details

Ecopista Atoleiros – Sulfúrea reuses a disused railway corridor and forms part of the Caminhos de Santiago. Ecopista do Alto Alentejo includes a 14-kilometre section linking the restored railway stations of Fronteira and Cabeço de Vide. These details give the two named routes distinct points of reference: a reused railway corridor and a route section between two stations.

Estação do Caminho de Ferro de Cabeço de Vide has 23 exterior panels depicting rural activities; some feature symmetrical floral motifs. The interior wall panelling is also made of polychrome tiles. The station’s decoration thus extends from its exterior panels to the interior.
