Lagoa de Óbidos near Foz Do Arelho covers almost seven square kilometres and extends into the municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha. It is also well suited to birdwatching: flamingos and turnstones can be spotted here. The lagoon thus combines a vast expanse of water with a distinctive nature experience.
Two sides of the coast
The beach facing the open sea offers conditions for surfing and also has Blue Flag status. The beach on the lagoon side has calm waters suitable for children. The two sides therefore differ in their respective beach conditions: open sea with surfing conditions and calm water by the lagoon.
Walking along the coast and through the landscape
The Passadiços da Foz do Arelho protect the cliff and dune ecosystems and allow visitors to take in the landscape without damaging it or compromising its safety. The route, about 800 metres long, includes seven viewpoints overlooking the coast and the Berlengas archipelago. Its length and viewpoints provide a clear guide for a walk with coastal views.
Another walking trail leads from Lagoa de Óbidos to Foz Do Arelho beach. The INATEL trail passes through farmland and wooded areas, crosses the village and reaches the Atlantic coast. If you plan to take this route, check the trail conditions locally before setting out.

You can distinguish the routes by their stated features: woodland, the lagoon shore or a route along the road.
History and local culture
The Casa-Museu Dr. Jaime Umbelino offers a historical insight into the way of life and customs of the people of Foz Do Arelho. It is located in the former Casa do Arco, where Jaime Jorge Umbelino (1916–2007) was born. He was a writer, linguist, lecturer and chronicler. The house hosts artist residencies, themed exhibitions, discussion groups and cultural initiatives. Visits can be arranged through the Junta de Freguesia de Foz do Arelho; check the contact details before your visit.
Quinta de N. Sra. de Guadalupe also offers a glimpse into the history of the area: it dates from the 16th century and includes a chapel built in 1580. Its features include a stone bearing the Medeiros coat of arms and a 16th-century polychrome wooden sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Another collecting theme is explored at Casa das Conchas, a malacological exhibition space in Foz Do Arelho, where more than 10,000 shells are on display.
A maritime episode dates back to 1892. At that time, the English steamship Roumania, en route from Liverpool to Bombay, sank off Foz Do Arelho beach. This historical event connects the beach with a specific story of a voyage, without the need for another excursion destination.
