Water shapes the discoveries in Castanheira De Pêra in very different ways. Praia Fluvial das Rocas lies in the heart of the town beside a lake almost a kilometre long and is designed as a leisure complex. Facilities include a 2,100 m² wave pool and trips in rowing or pedal boats. For views of river landscapes and green banks, Praia Fluvial do Poço Corga has a different character: it lies beside the Ribeira de Pera in natural surroundings, with clear water and green spaces. There is a picnic area with natural shade on the riverbank, and the site is also well equipped for visitors with reduced mobility.

At Coentral Grande, the Ribeira das Quelhas, in turn, features waterfalls and clear pools accessible via a pedestrian walkway. The comparison highlights their different characters: leisure by the lake, a picnic area on the riverbank, and a landscape with waterfalls.

Hiking trails: circular route or linear trail

Two trails with different layouts start at Largo do Vidoiro in Coentral Grande: PR1 Rota dos Coentrais is a circular trail, while PR3 Rota dos Neveiros is a linear trail. The PR1 route passes what are thought to be the remains of a medieval paved road and goes under Ponte de Cavalete, past an old watermill. The PR3 runs alongside the remains of an old mine. So, although the two routes share a starting point, their layouts and historical traces differ.

Another circular trail is PR2 Rota da Água e da Pedra. It starts at the foot of Passadiço das Quelhas near Coentral Grande and follows an extensive network of levadas that cross farmland and the village. The linear Rota dos Açudes is listed as approximately seven kilometres long and runs between Moita and Castanheira De Pêra.

The drive from Castanheira De Pêra to Coentral Grande uses local mountain roads, whose conditions can vary.

Snow administration and textile history

The area’s history can also be explored through specific places and objects. The Santo António da Neve chapel was built at the former Cabeço do Pereiro at the instigation of Julião Pereira de Castro. He served as chief snow administrator to the royal household. The historical name and his role give the chapel an unusual connection to the administration of snow.

Another trail leads to the textile industry. The traditional Castanheira-de-Pera barrete is made entirely of wool; its production is linked to the methods used by the local textile industry at the end of the 19th century. Fábrica das Sarnadas preserves textile machinery, old circular looms, and handmade moulds used to dry woollen items. Together, the barrete and the tools illustrate different aspects of the region’s textile history: a finished garment and the techniques used to process wool.

The municipal Rota da Urze draws attention to the heather on the slopes of Castanheira De Pêra. The plant is also essential to producing Serra da Lousã heather honey.

Calendar and local information

The Feira de Arte e Artesanato in Pêra takes place on the second Sunday of each month from April to December. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific date in advance. In Castanheira De Pêra, Casa do Tempo serves as the local tourist information centre and as an exhibition space—two functions that bring together practical information and a chance to view exhibitions in one place.

Regional cuisine is also part of the discovery: Restaurante O Gil highlights oven-roasted kid goat, known as “salta-paredes,” which is one of the region’s typical dishes. Its name and preparation give the dish a distinctive place alongside the destination’s hiking trails, waterside spots, and textile traditions.
