Between the Atlantic and the Lagoon
Praia da Foz do Arelho forms the boundary between the ocean and the lagoon. This brings two clearly defined landscape features together at the beach; on the lagoon side, the water is calm and sheltered. This offers a distinctive starting point when choosing where to stay: Foz do Arelho can be understood not only through the Atlantic, but also through the lagoon. If you would like to experience both the beach and the lagoon landscape on your trip, this is a place shaped by that transition. Local newspapers describe Foz do Arelho as a venue for grand festivities, banquets and hunts.
Near Foz do Arelho lies Lagoa de Óbidos, a lagoon covering almost seven square kilometres and extending across the municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha. Its size and its reach across two municipalities make it a landscape in its own right, alongside the beach. It also offers a connection with nature during your stay: the lagoon is suitable for birdwatching, and flamingos and ruddy turnstones, among other birds, can be observed there. This lets you consider the waterscape and birdwatching as distinct but closely connected interests when choosing where to stay.
Water Sports and Trails
There are several named activities for water sports enthusiasts. Centro Náutico Foz do Arelho offers instruction in canoeing, stand-up paddling and rowing. Escola de Vela da Lagoa is on the north shore of Lagoa de Óbidos near Foz do Arelho and offers lessons and practical windsurfing activities. According to the school, windsurfing lessons began in 1997. The specific differences are the sports on offer: canoeing, stand-up paddling and rowing at Centro, and windsurfing at Escola. When choosing, you can therefore start by considering which sport interests you.
The hiking routes differ in their layout. One trail passes through the village and then continues to the Atlantic coast. A circular trail starts and ends at Inatel Foz do Arelho. The route layout is a useful point of comparison when planning: the first route leads from the village to the coast, while the circular trail ends where it begins. This lets you decide whether you prefer a route to the Atlantic or a loop that starts and finishes at Inatel. Pedra da Escada is a section of the Atlantic coast from which Baleal and the Berlengas can be seen in the distance.
