At Praia da Vieira, Xávega nets reach the sand, and families, onlookers and tourists gather to watch. Arte Xávega continues to be celebrated as an essential part of Praia da Vieira’s cultural heritage. Here, a fishing tradition valued for its cultural significance meets a specific moment on the shore. Praia da Vieira is a seaside beach in Vieira de Leiria.
Fishing, the river and crafts
Vieira de Leiria lies on the left bank of the Rio Lis, near its mouth and at the northern end of the Pinhal de Leiria. Avieira culture is based on gastronomy, stilt houses, traditional boats known as Bateiras, and practiced crafts. The historical fishing culture also reveals a seasonal pattern: when the sea became rougher, from the end of summer until mid-spring, fishermen took to the water and turned to catching various river fish. These included shad, lamprey, Saboga, Fataça, eel and pike-perch. Local handicrafts include miniatures, traditional boats, glass weaving, basketry, nets and Sarrico.
Wooden chapel, churches and memorials
Capela Praia da Vieira was built in 1973 from wood from Pinhal do Rei and is one of Portugal’s rare religious wooden buildings. It consists of three sections and has a freestanding bell tower. The present-day Igreja Matriz de Vieira de Leiria was built in 1767 and extended in 1783. The two churches therefore have different building histories, each associated with specific dates.
Monumento ao Pescador was erected in 1992 on Avenida dos Pescadores in Praia da Vieira and consists of a Meia-Lua boat called “Rio Liz.” Memorial aos Náufragos do Salsinha commemorates 13 men who lost their lives when the boat “Salsinha” sank on November 15, 1907. The two memorials have different emphases: one is a monument featuring a boat, while the other commemorates the victims of a shipwreck. Every August, Praia da Vieira celebrates festivals in honour of São Pedro and Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes.
Regional cuisine and weekly markets
Arroz de Marisco da Praia da Vieira was named one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Gastronomy in September 2011. The local selection also includes Petinga de Caldeirada and Carapau Ensopado; Brisas and Vieiras are desserts. Carapau seco, also known as Enjoado, is a speciality of Praia da Vieira and is sold at Mercado das Peixeiras. The market selection may vary seasonally.
There is a weekly market in Vieira de Leiria on Saturdays and another in Lugar da Praia da Vieira on Sundays. If you are planning a market visit, check the dates locally, as schedules may change. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two market days without mistaking them for a single venue.
EuroVelo 1 and surfing

The Surfer's Place offers surf and bodyboard lessons for all skill levels and age groups, as well as surf equipment rental and surf-related workshops.
