The PR1 Trilho da Batalha da Roliça is a walking and cycling route whose starting point is marked by a tile panel about the Peninsular War; the panel depicts the Battle of Roliça. A bicycle washing station is located beside it. The route leads to the 1st French Position and Columbeira; via Serra do Picoto, it continues to the grave of Lieutenant Colonel Lake and the 2nd French Position. In this way, the route connects an image of the battle with named historical destinations.

The Battle’s History at the Interpretation Centre

The Núcleo Interpretativo da Batalha da Roliça complements the route’s perspective with physical and audiovisual exhibits, as well as a virtual reality experience. Visits are free and possible Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 18:30. Before your visit, check the opening hours for any short-notice changes. The two time slots offer a practical guide for planning your day. They also provide different ways to engage with the subject: a route with named historical destinations or the exhibition media at the Núcleo.

Tile Panels, the Market and Local Produce

At Bombarral railway station, tile panels from the 1930s depict rural scenes. The Mercado Municipal combines a fruit and vegetable market with preserved tile panels from the former Quinta de Santo António. The imagery differs: rural scenes shape the panels at the station, while those in the market are part of the former Quinta’s history. You can therefore encounter tile panels in two distinct contexts—with a dated subject and as preserved depictions of the Quinta.

The Festival do Vinho Português originated in the 1960s. The Feira Nacional da Pera Rocha was founded in 1996 to highlight the importance of the Rocha pear, which has a protected designation of origin. The years indicate different roles: the festival’s origin is given, while the fair’s founding year and clear purpose are stated. Wine and the Rocha pear thus represent distinct aspects of local event history.

The PR3 Percurso de Barrocalvo offers another perspective on local food culture. It starts near the Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, where residents gather on Sundays and bake bread in a wood-fired oven to sell. Unlike the event histories, whose dates mark an origin or founding, this is a Sunday tradition. The routes also differ in theme: the PR1 focuses on the battle and historical destinations, while the PR3 is about the bread-making tradition near the Ermida.
