Reguengos de Monsaraz can be explored through two distinctive themes: wine culture and traditional crafts. There are also collections, architectural history and a longer hiking route. If you are planning a stay, you can weigh these options against one another: Would you like to focus on wineries and tastings, make time for museums, or spend several hours walking?

Wine Culture and Regional Products

The municipal wine guide, updated in 2023, lists eleven wineries in the Reguengos de Monsaraz wine region and names ten of them as offering wine tourism for visitors. Adega José de Sousa is in the town centre. There are 114 clay vessels there, known as talhas, in which a centuries-old fermentation process dating back to the Romans is carried out. A private tour with tasting includes four talha wines and regional products. Check the reservation details before your trip.

Another wine destination is Adega do Calisto in the northern part of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Together, the two locations provide a clear sense of direction within the town: Adega José de Sousa is in the centre, while Adega do Calisto is in the north. At the Mercado Municipal de Reguengos de Monsaraz, you can find Alentejo products such as river fish, herbs, vegetables, wild asparagus, wild mushrooms, cured meats, cheese and bread.

Palácio Rojão, Collections and Town History

The town library houses the permanent exhibition of traditional arts and crafts. It includes around 1,000 wine-related objects and a reconstructed wine cellar. The library is located in the Palácio Rojão, a palace built in the historic centre during the first half of the 19th century. The fresco room at the Palácio has 44 frescoes on its walls, ceiling and doors. The exhibition and the building’s history therefore offer different ways to explore wine and local cultural heritage.

Another notable collection is housed at the Museu Megalítico José Maria da Fonseca: it contains a 4.7-metre-high menhir stele. The Núcleo de Arte Contemporânea de Reguengos de Monsaraz opened on 3 May 2021 with an exhibition of ten works from the Novo Banco collection. The works shown there include two paintings by Noronha da Costa. Exhibitions may change, so check which works are currently on display before your visit.

Praça de Touros José Mestre Batista also has a precisely dated history: it was inaugurated on 15 August 1924. The Museu José Mestre Batista displays the most significant professional and personal legacy of the horseman José Mestre Batista. Together with the megalithic museum and contemporary art, this offers a range of cultural themes that you can weigh separately when planning your trip.

Crafts in Reguengos and the Surrounding Area

In nearby São Pedro do Corval, you can watch potters shape clay on the wheel; more than two dozen pottery workshops operate there on a permanent basis. Another craft-related stop is the Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios, which offers insights into the manufacturing process and guided tours. Traditional blankets from Reguengos are made there as part of the weaving process. Check tour booking details before your trip.

Hiking and Regional Options

The Rota do Comboio is a moderate, 12.9-kilometre hiking trail in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. The route is listed as taking three to four hours. It starts and ends at Parque da Cidade in Reguengos de Monsaraz. This makes it possible to plan for a several-hour activity and distinguish it from a stay focused primarily on museums, architectural history or wine culture.

For a broader view beyond the town, the Dark Sky® Alqueva and OLA observatories in the wider region offer guided stargazing and family-oriented activities. Activity details may change; check the current programme in advance.

With these priorities in mind, you can then search more specifically for a hotel for your trip.
