The Porta da Vila brings Monsaraz’s architectural history into focus: the granite gate with its Gothic arch, protected by two semicircular towers, is the town’s most important and distinctive entrance. Other highlights range from churches and fortifications to regional culture and things to see at Alqueva. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether architecture, cultural events, or activities on the water and under the night sky should shape your visit.

Churches, fortifications and medieval heritage

The original Gothic Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa was built in the second half of the 13th century. Its artistic furnishings date from the 17th and 18th centuries; it also has eight side chapels.

The Alcáçova, part of the complex of fortifications and inner-town walls, has a trapezoidal ground plan and is flanked by four square towers. Monsaraz’s medieval heritage also includes the castle and its keep.

The Pelourinho de Monsaraz symbolises judicial authority and municipal autonomy. Another trace of history leads to the Hospital do EspĂrito Santo, also known as Albergaria do EspĂrito Santo: the 13th-century building served pilgrims from Andalusia and the left bank of the Guadiana on their way to Santa Maria de Terena.

Regional culture and exhibitions

Since 2010, the Museu do Fresco has hosted annual themed exhibitions on the history and culture of the region. Art exhibitions are held at the Igreja de Santiago as part of the Monsaraz Museu Aberto exhibition series.

At the Casa do Cante, you can learn about the history of Cante in the municipality. You can also watch choir rehearsals and take part in them. The Museu Coleção Vintém displays membranophones, aerophones, chordophones and idiophones.

Monsaraz Museu Aberto takes place every year in July. The programme offers insights into Alentejo handicrafts and cuisine, as well as music, theatre, dance and visual art exhibitions.

Alqueva, views and stargazing

During the day, the OLA – Observatório do Lago Alqueva offers solar observations of sunspots, prominences and filaments on the Sun’s surface. At night, you can use telescopes there to observe star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies. The offerings thus differ clearly by time of day and observation target.

Monsaraz lies at an altitude of more than 300 metres, overlooks the surrounding plain and offers far-reaching views of Lake Alqueva. Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz is the first river beach on the Alqueva reservoir and has received Blue Flag and Praia + AcessĂvel awards.

The Centro Náutico de Monsaraz has public toilets, showers, a children’s area and a picnic area. Check the operating details before your visit.

Outdoor activities sometimes cover a wider geographical area: in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, the location on Alqueva makes activities such as boat trips, walks and horse rides on unpaved paths possible. The PR1: Escritas de Pedra e Cal circular walking trail lists the Menir do Outeiro as one of its points of interest; the menhir lies outside the town itself. The Cromeleque do Xerez is also located near Monsaraz, close to the Convento da Orada, in the village of Telheiro and in the parish of Monsaraz.

There are two specific points of reference when planning your trip: Monsaraz Museu Aberto takes place every year in July, while the OLA offers observations during the day and at night. If you are planning your accommodation around the festival or a stargazing session, check the current dates in advance.
