Redondo can be explored from several perspectives: traditional pottery, the Alentejo’s wine tradition and collections relating to rural life. Parque Ambiental adds walking trails, a body of water and opportunities for exercise or picnics to these cultural themes. When planning your stay, you can consider whether crafts and history, wine or time outdoors should shape your visit.

Pottery and rural life

Museu do Barro opened in 2009 to preserve and revive Redondo’s traditional pottery. It traces the craft’s historical development and displays representative pieces made using various clay-working techniques. These pieces can also be purchased there. The museum thus offers a glimpse of both the history of pottery and its products.

The craft includes both functional and decorative ceramics, which are preserved at several pottery centres in the town. Alongside simple earthenware, there are pieces featuring floral motifs or scenes from rural life. Visitors interested in design can compare these motifs with the clay-working techniques shown at Museu do Barro.

The Núcleo de Arte Pastoril – Coleção António Carmelo Aires offers another perspective on everyday life. The collection includes dozens of objects from rural life, made from cork, horn, wood, leather, reed and textiles. The pieces date from the 19th century to the 1960s. Together with the pottery, the collection shows the different ways materials have been used in Redondo’s craft heritage.

Wine tradition and regional cuisine

Museu Regional do Vinho de Redondo opened to the public in September 2001 and is dedicated to the Alentejo’s wine-growing tradition. Its permanent exhibition includes agricultural equipment, objects, images and texts about the art of winemaking. A multimedia kiosk provides information about the museum, the region’s wineries and activities related to winegrowing. The focus here is on the culture of production.

Redondo is known in Portugal for its wine production and is one of the regions with Denominação de Origem Controlada (D.O.C.) status. The Enoteca offers another side of wine: it is a cultural venue for wine tastings in the historic centre of Redondo. Alentejo wines are served with regional cheeses, cured meats and Alentejo bread, presented in traditional earthenware. In Redondo, wine and ceramics also come together at the table.

Nature and exercise at Parque Ambiental

Parque Ambiental de Redondo lies beside a stream and features dense vegetation and a large body of water. The park has a multi-purpose sports court, a picnic area, several walking trails and exercise equipment. Its range of facilities makes it appealing for various outdoor activities, from walking the trails to exercising on the equipment. The park also aims to introduce visitors to the biodiversity found throughout the municipality. The nature theme therefore extends beyond the park: its educational role relates to the diversity of the municipality, while the trails and facilities are located within the park itself.

Historic traces and festival traditions

The history of the Misericórdia in Redondo also goes back a long way. It traces its origins to a hostel founded in 1443 by Catarina Pires Folgada, the widow of Vicente Anes Colombo. In 1521, the institution was formally established by an Alvará issued by D. Manuel. These dates give local history a specific timeframe.

The history of Carnival in Redondo goes back to the first half of the 20th century. It was originally known as Festa das Flores; its defining features included a large-scale parade and the Batalha das Flores. These festival traditions differ from permanent collections and exhibitions: they reveal Redondo through its shared history, while museums and crafts focus on specific objects and techniques.
