Montoito brings together the Parque Ambiental, a history of medieval events and local cultural heritage. This means there are different interests to consider when choosing the town as a place to stay: the park combines sport, recreation and leisure; the Feira Medieval is associated with past editions; and the Igreja Matriz de N.ª Sr.ª da Assunção and the Moinho de Vento represent different aspects of the local architectural heritage. When planning your stay, you can weigh up whether a park, a suitable event date or architectural history is the strongest reason to visit Montoito.

Park and leisure

The Parque Ambiental de Montoito is located between the Centro Escolar and the Parque de Feiras de Montoito. Its facilities cater to sport, recreation and leisure. These three areas give the park more than one main use: sport and recreation sit side by side, while leisure offers another option. Admission is free. If you would like to include sport or recreation in your stay alongside the town’s history, the Parque Ambiental offers a specific point of interest. It complements the architectural and event history with another consideration when choosing where to visit.

A regular Thursday stop

Another point to consider when planning is the bookmobile. Biblioteca Itinerante 33 de Redondo stops at EB1 – Montoito every Thursday from 10:00 to 11:15. This 75-minute time slot falls on Thursday morning. If you would like to plan around this stop, check the schedule before your visit. Unlike the architectural history, the stop is tied to a specific day of the week and time.

The Feira Medieval on different dates

The Feira Medieval de Montoito can be understood through specific past editions. In 2019, it was held for the third time, with Montoito residents taking part in a re-enactment of the Middle Ages. At the Feira Medieval on 18 and 19 May 2024, the market featured regional product vendors, artisans, confectionery and food offerings. Comparing the two years reveals different aspects: the medieval re-enactment with residents’ participation in 2019, and the market with its regional and food offerings in 2024. If you would like to attend a future edition, check its dates before travelling.

Architectural heritage from different periods

Several historical layers must be distinguished at the Igreja Matriz de N.ª Sr.ª da Assunção. The church already existed in 1260; its construction dates to the 16th century, and it underwent extensive renovation in the 17th and 18th centuries. The church’s early existence and the building’s construction and renovation history therefore represent different periods in its past.

The Moinho de Vento offers another perspective on local architectural heritage. It is listed in the municipal register as non-classified local architectural heritage to be preserved. At the church, you can explore its development over time; at the mill, its municipal designation as a building to be preserved. Together, the two offer different ways to explore Montoito’s architectural history.
