The PR1 PRS — Serra do Carvalho runs through native oak forests near Carvalho and Soutelo, connecting Louredo Natura Parque with Monumento aos Aviadores. At 9.5 kilometres long, this linear hiking trail has a clear route and two named endpoints. If you plan to walk it, take both into account; route details may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Hiking and swimming

Swimming is possible along the banks of the Mondego River at Louredo Natura Parque. Seasonal water conditions may vary. Complexo de Piscinas de Fraga offers a different kind of swimming, with several natural pools. The complex includes shaded areas, a bar and a terrace; it is located in SĂŁo Miguel de Poiares on Estrada da Beira (EN17). Operating seasons and facilities may change, so check the latest information before visiting. The riverbank and natural pools offer two distinct swimming options.

Traces of history and architecture

At Dólmen de São Pedro Dias, a burial mound and traces of the burial chamber remain. The monument lies about 50 metres from Estrada da Beira (N17). Jardim Municipal reflects a different era: it is home to stately trees brought here from the forests of Buçaco in the first half of the 20th century.

The religious buildings also tell different stories of construction. Igreja Matriz is an 18th-century building, although the first structures were older. Igreja de São Miguel dates from the mid-18th century; its façade is flanked by two bell towers. At Ponte de Mucela, four arches come in two sizes: two larger ones span the Alva River, while two smaller ones span the settlement.

Crafts, traditions and dates

Black pottery is a traditional craft that has long been practised in Vila Nova De Poiares; it originated in Olho Marinho. For travellers interested in local craft traditions, it offers a distinct way to connect with the culture of the place.

The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades date back to the late 19th century. Capela de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades was inaugurated in 1909. A traditional procession in honour of Nossa Senhora passes through the town’s streets.

The events calendar also offers a range of dates to plan around. Semana da Chanfana is an annual gastronomic exhibition held during the week that coincides with the municipal holiday on 13 January. Festa de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades takes place on the second weekend in August. POIARTES is an annual national exhibition of regional products, held in the town centre on the second weekend in September.
