Praia de Mira’s bathing beach stretches for about one kilometre and is made up of fine white sand. But the coast offers more than one kind of beach: dune paths, a protected landscape and differing conditions at the beach and lagoon all shape what there is to discover locally.
Contrasting beaches and dunes
At the southern end of the seafront promenade, a raised boardwalk leads to a beach with a natural dune front. From there, you can see lagoons, forest, dunes and the ocean all at once. The view brings together several landscape features without requiring you to leave the beach setting.
Praia de Mira Sul offers a different experience: its sandy beach is shorter, but the sea conditions are better suited to surfing and other water sports. If you’re looking for different coastal experiences, there’s a clear distinction between the longer bathing beach at Praia de Mira and the shorter stretch at Praia de Mira Sul.
Praia de Mira’s primary dune is also worth a look, with its diverse vegetation. Numerous bird species can be spotted on the fine white-sand beaches and along the boardwalks through the dunes. Sightings vary by season. At Viveiros, you can explore the natural habitats of more than 200 species; scientific information is available at each habitat. Viveiros is part of a Site of Community Importance and is protected because of the importance of its habitats and the plant and animal species found there.
Lagoons and trails in the municipality of Mira
The Lagoa da Barrinha has calm waters suited to sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Kitesurfing, paddle sports, rowing and fishing are also listed as possible activities at the Barrinha de Praia de Mira and the lagoon. As well as the conditions at sea, the lagoons offer a distinct perspective on the area’s water sports.
To see the wider landscape of the municipality of Mira, explore the Pista Ciclopedonal do MunicĂpio de Mira. This 38-kilometre cycling and walking route forms part of the Rota da Costa Atlântica, which is included in the EuroVelo network. It circles the Mira and Barrinha lagoons and passes reed beds, pastures, dunes, beaches and lush pine forest. The route brings different types of landscape together along the way, while remaining a trail within the municipality of Mira.
Fishing, crafts and local history
Palheiros de Mira | Museu | Posto de Turismo is a multisensory space where you can discover the stories, traditions and cultures of the people who made this area their home. It also explores traditional arts from the past and their connection to the area, including Arte Xávega.
Memórias da Praia Antiga depicts Praia de Mira in the mid-20th century through a scale model built at a ratio of 1:32. The model is a handcrafted wooden work of art made by former fishermen who now work as artisans. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição offers a different perspective on local building history. Founded in 1843, its original building was constructed entirely of wood on stilts and used the building technique of the palheiros.
Arte Xávega remains a tourist attraction and a living spectacle in Praia de Mira. In this traditional form of fishing, fishermen head out to sea in a distinctive, crescent-shaped wooden boat. Using large, carefully crafted nets, they drive shoals of fish towards the beach. The boat’s design and the work with the nets combine to make this a vivid local tradition.
Festivals and beach life
During the Festa do Pescador, procession figures are carried on traditional boats across the Barrinha to the town centre, where an open-air Mass is held. The details of the procession may change. The Mostra Gastronómica da Região da Gândara takes place in Praia de Mira on the third weekend of September; if you’re planning your trip around it, check the event dates in advance.
Praia de Mira received the Blue Flag for the 40th consecutive time in 2026. The town also has a beach library and environmental education areas. As these facilities may change, it’s advisable to check that they’re available before your visit.
