The municipality offers a range of ways to explore these themes. The River Ceira flows through Góis; a circular route connects four villages that are part of the Aldeias do Xisto network.

River and river beach

The River Ceira shapes the landscape of Góis and flows through the town. Another specific connection with the water is Praia Fluvial da Peneda/Pêgo Escuro: it has a sand island in the river and has been awarded the Blue Flag. This brings two different aspects of the river into focus: the Ceira as it flows through Góis, and the sand island at a named river beach.

If you are choosing a trip based on landscape themes, you can use these details as a guide without treating them as a fixed itinerary. The river is part of what defines the town geographically; Praia Fluvial adds a distinctive landscape feature with its sand island.

Schist villages and hiking trails

Four villages in the municipality of Góis are part of the Aldeias do Xisto network: Aigra Nova, Aigra Velha, Comareira and Pena. The PR1 GOI circular route connects the same four villages. This makes it possible to distinguish between two aspects: membership of the Aldeias do Xisto describes the network, while PR1 describes the route of a circular walk between the villages.

The schist villages can be reached from Góis via the EN342 and EN2. The PR1 GOI hiking trail runs within the Serra da Lousã Natura 2000 site. Several hiking trails explore the landscape around Penedos de Góis, with varying levels of difficulty. This offers different points of comparison when planning: the PR1 highlights the connection between the four villages and the protected area, while Penedos offers a choice of several trails with varying levels of difficulty.

Architecture and local events

The Igreja de Góis, including the tomb of the Count of Sortelha, is classified as a National Monument. The Capela de São Sebastião offers a different example of the historic connection between a building and its setting: it was built in the 18th century at the western end of the Ponte sobre o rio Ceira. Watermills have also been preserved along the riverbanks. In Pena, the architecture combines schist and quartzite. These examples highlight different features—from a classified church with a tomb to a chapel by the bridge, riverside mills and the combination of materials in a schist village.

A pilgrimage in honour of Nossa Senhora da Candosa takes place at the Cerro da Candosa viewpoint on 15 August. The character of the steep, rocky slopes at Cerro da Candosa and Desfiladeiro do Cabril is quite different: they offer suitable conditions for extreme sports, and related activities are often held in this area. Góis therefore combines cultural events with landscapes that are also relevant to sporting activities.
