There are specific things to explore during a stay in Tábua: an approximately 17 km tourist and cultural trail, the walkways at Vale de Gaios, Baroque chapel architecture and regional dishes. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you can choose from different highlights and decide how to balance them during your stay.
Experience the landscape in two ways
The PR4 – Trilho dos Gaios – Um Percurso com História begins at the Capela do Senhor dos Milagres in Tábua. The route is approximately 17 km long and runs between Tábua and Vila Nova de Oliveirinha. As a tourist and cultural trail, it combines a defined route with a cultural focus. Its starting point, endpoints and approximate length give you a framework for deciding how much space this route should take up in your stay.
The walkways at Vale de Gaios offer a different perspective on the landscape. They take you through the scenery along the Rio de Cavalos, which includes old mills and waterfalls. The two experiences therefore differ in their stated focus: the PR4 is defined by its route, starting point and endpoints, and approximate length; the walkways are shaped by the river landscape, mills and waterfalls. If you are mainly looking for a longer tourist and cultural route, the PR4 is a good guide. If you are interested in the landscape along the Rio de Cavalos, the walkways offer a fitting thematic connection.
Chapel and cultural heritage
The Capela do Senhor dos Milagres is not only the starting point of the PR4, but also an architectural attraction in its own right. It was built in the mid-18th century. Its main body is octagonal; stylistically, the chapel belongs to the late Baroque period and the transition to Rococo. Its date of construction, shape and style offer three different ways to explore the building.
The chapel is also associated with an annual religious occasion: a festival in honour of the patron saint takes place there forty days after Easter. If you would like to visit Tábua specifically for this festival, check the date for the year in question. Another cultural point of interest is the Via Romana da Pedra da Sé, which is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público.
Rural life in the museum
The Sala Museu Etnográfico da Casa do Povo de Tábua presents collections relating to agricultural practices, local customs, and traditional arts and crafts. Its themes range from agriculture and community life to creative and craft skills. Activities recreating rural practices take place regularly. Visits and activities are by prior arrangement, so bear this in mind when planning your museum visit.
Flavours of Tábua and the Dão
Traditional savoury dishes associated with Tábua include Bucho à Moda de Tábua, Chanfana, Torresmos and Tiborna. Among the sweet dishes, Carolos de Vila Nova de Oliveirinha is a traditional speciality of Tábua’s cuisine. This culinary connection is complemented by wine from the Região Demarcada do Dão, with which Tábua is associated. These examples offer a guide to different regional flavours: savoury dishes, sweets and wine from the Dão.
