Pedra da Sé is a distinctive granite formation and natural viewpoint overlooking the Rio Mondego and the Barragem da Aguieira. In Tábua, alongside this scenic vantage point, you will encounter historic buildings, routes through river landscapes and local traditions. Churches and bridges tell stories of different eras; hiking trails each offer their own blend of nature and history.
Hiking trails and landscapes
The PR4 Trilho dos Gaios starts at the Capela do Senhor dos Milagres in Tábua. The trail is about 17 kilometres long and runs between Tábua and Vila Nova de Oliveirinha. At Vale de Gaios, it crosses walkways through a landscape along the Rio de Cavalos, where old mills and waterfalls shape the scenery. If you plan to hike this trail, check current trail conditions beforehand.
The two Caminhos do Xisto also reveal different sides of the landscape. On the PR1 Caminho do Xisto de Midões, the small Rio Cavalos in the Sumes area is a scenic attraction. Pine trees and cork oaks define the surroundings, where foxes and wild boar can be found. The PR2 Caminho do Xisto de Sevilha features the Rio Cavalos, a waterfall, old mills and a medieval bridge. The first trail particularly highlights vegetation and wildlife, while the second brings together river and waterfall scenery with historic structures.
The Grande Rota do Alva passes through Tábua and is part of a 77-kilometre linear route that also connects Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares, Arganil and Oliveira do Hospital. On the Alva, weirs and the river’s morphology make nature-friendly leisure activities possible, including canoeing and some extreme sports. Water conditions vary seasonally. For mountain biking, there is another way to find your bearings: the Rota dos Trilhos includes 15 single-track routes.
Buildings and traces of history
The Capela do Senhor dos Milagres is an 18th-century late Baroque building and is classified as a building of public interest. The fact that the PR4 starts here directly links a named cultural site with a hiking trail. The Igreja Paroquial de Tábua dates from the 19th century and has Santa Maria Maior as its patron saint. Its notable furnishings include sculptures, church silver and liturgical vestments.
The dimensions of the Ponte romana dos Sumes are easy to appreciate: the bridge over the Rio de Cavalos is about 50 metres long, its roadway about 3 metres wide, and it has a single semicircular arch. It was probably part of the Roman road linking Bobadela and Viseu. The Pelourinho de Midões stands in the centre of Midões and is also classified as a building of public interest.
The Casa da família do Desembargador Taborda also has public heritage status. The earliest references to the house date from 1756; it includes an attached chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Dores. The Pelourinho do Coito is also known as the Pelourinho do Couto or Coito de Midões and is associated with one of the small medieval municipal districts. Together, these sites showcase different forms of architectural heritage, from a bridge and a pelourinho to a house with a chapel.
Culture, everyday life and regional cuisine
The Centro Cultural de Tábua offers weekly performances in film, theatre and music. It also has three multipurpose rooms used for municipal programmes for seniors, as well as art and theatre programmes. If you would like to attend a particular performance, check the schedule in advance.
The Sala Museu Etnográfico da Casa do Povo de Tábua documents agricultural practices, customs, and traditional arts and crafts. Activities recreating rural practices are held there regularly. For specific events, it is advisable to check the current programme before your trip.
Cuisine is also part of the local character: traditional dishes and drinks include Bucho à Moda de Tábua, Chanfana, Torresmos, Tiborna and wine from the Dão. Those interested in different aspects of the place will find this a different way to experience it than through churches, bridges or hiking trails.
For accessible visits, Praia Fluvial da Ronqueira has reserved parking spaces, a platform lift, and signage in Braille and with large-format pictograms. If these facilities are important for your visit, check their current condition before travelling.
