Ázere offers a variety of local sights: at its centre stands the pillory in Largo D. Afonso II, near the parish church; there are also historic churches and chapels, a viewpoint next to former uranium mines, and a picnic area. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip. You can take into account architectural styles and historical dates, as well as the views of green countryside and the facilities at Parque de Merendas.
A landmark in Largo D. Afonso II
The Pelourinho de Ázere stands in the centre of Ázere, in Largo D. Afonso II and near the parish church. Its upper section consists of a pyramidal pinnacle topped by a stylised iron armillary sphere. The structure thus combines an upward-tapering form with a metal finial. If you are interested in architecture, the pillory is a striking example whose upper section defines the structure. The churches and chapels, by contrast, are notable above all for their dedications, historical events and individual architectural features.
Churches, chapels and historical dates
The Igreja Paroquial de Ázere is dedicated to Saint Mammes, known in Portuguese as São Mamede. Following work carried out in the early 17th century, it reopened for worship in 1614. The date therefore refers to its reopening, not its construction. This distinction is useful when considering the history of the parish church alongside the construction dates of other buildings.
The Capela da Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built in 1682 on a rocky outcrop. In contrast to the parish church, this date marks the construction of the chapel, while 1614 marks the reopening of the Igreja Paroquial. The two dates therefore refer to different historical events: a construction date and a reopening.
Another example of religious architecture is the Capela de Santo Amaro in Vila Seca, Ázere. Its front porch has six columns; a bell tower topped by a cross stands beside it. Each year, the chapel is the meeting place for the festival in honour of its patron saint, Santo Amaro. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the specific festival dates in advance. The Capela de N. Sra. da Paz is also part of Ázere’s heritage.
Countryside views and a picnic area
The Miradouro de Ázere has a viewing structure overlooking green countryside and is situated next to former uranium mines. The countryside views and this nearby feature give the viewpoint a different thematic focus from the religious buildings. Looking out over the greenery offers a scenic contrast to the churches and chapels.
The Parque de Merendas de Ázere has wooden benches, wooden tables and a barbecue. These facilities set the picnic area apart from the buildings and the Miradouro, whose character is defined by their architecture and views, respectively. Alongside historical and religious sights, Ázere also has practical facilities for taking a break.
