The ruins of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Finisterra lie in the present-day castle courtyard of Soure and belong to a Gothic church with three naves. The site served as a necropolis from the 12th to the 19th century. Here, church architecture and the site’s long use as a burial ground come together in one place. From September to December 2024, visitors could explore the medieval and modern-era necropolis of Santa Maria de Finisterra outdoors at the Centro Interpretativo do Espaço Muralhado de Soure.

Church architecture spanning several centuries

The Igreja Matriz de Soure was completed in 1490. Its original 15th-century layout is reflected in two side aisles and a central nave, separated by Gothic arcades. The church also houses a sculpture of Nossa Senhora de Finisterra dating from 1508. The Capela do Sacramento contains a 16th-century limestone retable from the workshop of João de Ruão. The chapel walls are covered with 17th-century blue-and-white tiles from the Fábrica de Coimbra. The traces of time at the Matriz thus range from its original layout and the sculpture to the later work in the chapel.

A separate timeline leads to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Soure, founded in 1520. Construction of the present-day Igreja da Misericórdia began in the early 17th century. The church follows the typical model of the Misericórdias of the Mondego region: it has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave church hall and a painted wooden ceiling with an illusionistic trompe-l’œil perspective. Trompe-l’œil refers to a painting technique that creates the illusion of spatial depth. The spatial designs differ: at the Matriz, arcades divide the church into three naves, while the Misericórdia has a single-nave church hall with a ceiling painted in perspective.

The Edifício dos Paços do Concelho is another architectural discovery in Soure. It displays features of Neo-Manueline romantic revival architecture, incorporating decorative elements of the Manueline style.

River landscapes and views

Parque dos Bacelos lies in the heart of the Vila de Soure at the confluence of the Arunca and Anços rivers, forming a kind of island. It covers an area of 51,076 m². Here, its position between two river courses stands alongside the distinct architectural forms of the churches and public buildings as a defining part of the townscape.

In the surroundings of Soure, near Paleão and outside the town center, the Romanesque Capela de São Mateus stands on a hill. From there, you can see the Massif des Sicó to the east and the houses of Soure to the west. Its setting and the two different views give this place a character distinct from the buildings in the town center.

Events and seasonal experiences

FATACIS and the Festas de São Mateus are among the most important events in the municipality of Soure. They bring together tradition, faith, culture and economic activity; their program includes music, folklore, gastronomy, handicrafts and traditional markets. The specific program may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the events, check the dates in advance.

The Piscina Municipal ao Ar Livre de Soure is also a seasonal attraction: it reopened for leisure and sport on June 13, 2026, marking the start of another swimming season. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the current opening days.

A municipal notice from 2024 described the Eco-Trilho dos Rios and its digital exploration as open to residents and tourists. If you plan to include the trail in your itinerary, check the latest information about access.
