In Montemor-o-Velho, an important wetland, historic buildings and waterside paths bring together different sides of the same trip. The Mondego shapes the fertile fields and extensive rice paddies. When looking for accommodation, it helps to make an initial decision: would you like to focus on birdwatching and scenery, or are you mainly interested in discovering historic sites and activities on the water? The differences below offer concrete points of reference without requiring a set itinerary.

Wetlands and Waterways

Paul do Taipal is designated both a Special Protection Area for birds and a Special Area of Conservation in the Natura 2000 network. Since 2001, it has also been recognised under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. The area serves birds as a breeding site, a winter refuge and a stopover and feeding place during migration. Those planning their trip around birdlife will therefore find different ecological roles here throughout the bird year.

For birdwatching, restored and newly built observation points have been linked by a marked circular trail. The Parque Ribeirinho de Montemor-o-Velho offers a different perspective on the landscape: it covers about 78,000 square metres, is almost two kilometres long and connects the historic centre with the riverside. The park also includes a cycle path.

Water activities with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and hydrobikes are offered at the Parque Ribeirinho; they may be seasonal. The Centro Náutico has a different focus: it offers three waterways with a total of five kilometres of navigable water. Around ten kilometres of cycle paths also run along these waterways. The figures therefore clearly distinguish between the area of water and the cycling distance, rather than combining the two activities into a single offering.

Castle, Museum and Historic Sites

The history can also be explored through specific sites. The oldest identifiable part of Montemor-o-Velho’s military system dates from the Islamic 11th century. The Church of Santa Maria da Alcáçova was founded within the castle walls in the late 11th century. The castle’s visitor route is circular and can be started at any point, offering a flexible way to explore the historic area.

The Monastery of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos houses the Municipal Museum of Montemor-o-Velho. It has a dedicated section on Fernão Mendes Pinto, his work Peregrinação and the relations between Portugal and the Orient. Those who would also like to explore the architectural heritage beyond the museum can find historical descriptions in Portuguese and English, as well as information in Portuguese Braille, in the Roteiro Monumental.

The Roteiro Monumental lists 23 buildings or institutions of recognised historical and artistic value. The places named are Arazede, Carapinheira, MeĂŁs do Campo, Montemor-o-Velho, Pereira, TentĂşgal and Verride. Each place has its own character: Pereira is described as an old, picturesque village on the left bank of the Mondego, at the foot of a hill. Among the places covered by the municipal route, TentĂşgal has preserved the largest number of surviving houses from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Rural Landscapes and Getting There

Gândara lies in the northern part of the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho. Its rural landscape is shaped by potato cultivation, pastureland and pine forests. This means that, alongside the wetland and historic heritage, agricultural landscapes offer a distinct experience for visitors.

When planning your journey, it is important to bear in mind the scale of the municipality: it is crossed by the EN 111 and A14 roads, as well as the Northern railway line. The rail connection to Figueira da Foz runs via Alfarelos. Check the latest timetables when planning a specific connection.
