Discover Sertã through its contrasts: Maranho da Sertã has a strictly defined area for its production, preparation and packaging, while from Serra do Cabeço da Rainha the view opens out across several mountain ranges as far as Castelo Branco. The picture is completed by sacred architecture, historic bridges and trails that reveal different sides of the municipality. This lets you consider culture, landscape and local cuisine as equally worthwhile interests.

Churches, Bridges and Rock Art

Igreja Matriz da Sertã was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century. Its features include three naves, two side altars with gilded retables, polychrome tile panels and the collegiate church’s choir stalls. These elements give the church a multifaceted character: the layout, altars, tiles and choir stalls each represent distinct aspects of sacred art.

Ponte da Carvalha was built during the Iberian Union at the beginning of the 17th century. At around 64 metres long, with six semicircular arches made of stone masonry, it makes a different impression from the church: here, the structure defines the building. The partly ruined Castelo da Sertã is also an excellent viewpoint over the town.

A municipal cultural agenda published in December 2025 introduces the Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre (CIAR), housed in the former primary school in Figueiredo. Its exhibitions and activities present the rock art heritage of Serra do Figueiredo. Alongside historic buildings, visitors can therefore explore exhibitions on rock art.

Pedrógão Pequeno adds its own landscape and cultural character to the municipality: the white granite village lies on the Zêzere and is part of the Aldeias do Xisto network. Igreja Matriz and Ponte Filipina are among its outstanding heritage features.

Landscapes with Far-Reaching Views

Serra do Cabeço da Rainha stretches for around 20 kilometres and is a natural viewpoint. From there, the view reaches the surrounding mountain ranges, including Serra do Moradal and Serra da Gardunha, as well as Castelo Branco. The valley on the Zêzere between Pedrógão Pequeno and Pedrógão Grande forms a different kind of landscape: it extends through a granite enclave between schist massifs.

Wildlife in the Sertã area includes red-legged partridge, black kite, common buzzard, fox, wild boar and badger. Another natural feature is the Azereiro, also known as Loureiro de Portugal or Gingeira Brava. This native species, which is rare and endangered in Portugal, can be seen along a walking trail.

On Foot, by Bike and on the Water

There are trails with different routes for walking. A linear trail connects Praia Fluvial do Troviscal with Sertã’s riverside recreation area; it is 21.5 kilometres long and takes about seven hours. By contrast, a circular trail follows a Roman road along Ribeira dos Porteleiros. It offers views of the 17th-century Ponte Filipina, as well as several viewpoints and rest areas.

The two trails differ in format: for the linear route, the distance and approximate duration are given; the circular trail focuses on its historic route, views and rest areas.

Grande Rota do Zêzere can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or by kayak. It enters the municipality of Sertã at Barragem do Cabril in the parish of Pedrógão Pequeno and also passes through the areas of Castelo and União de Freguesias de Cernache do Bonjardim, Nesperal e Palhais. Check the route’s conditions and services before setting off.

Centro Náutico do Zêzere, on Albufeira de Castelo de Bode, offers canoeing, water skiing, wakeboarding and boat hire. Activities and providers may change; check the latest information if you plan to use these services. Praia Fluvial do Troviscal is set in peaceful natural surroundings, holds the “Bandeira de Praia Acessível” award and has a motorhome parking area. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

Getting Around and Regional Cuisine

Estrada Nacional 2 crosses Sertã at kilometre 345. At Barragem do Cabril and in Pedrógão Pequeno, it reaches the municipality at kilometre 328. These kilometre markers give a precise indication of the road’s location without saying how long a journey takes.

Maranho is a distinctive dish from Sertã, with a history dating back to the 19th century. Its flavour combines goat meat and fresh mint. The area for its production, preparation and packaging is also clearly defined: it is limited to the municipality of Sertã.

Queima dos Madeiros represents unity and renewal. A municipal cultural agenda published in December 2025 records that some villages and places in the municipality observed this old tradition between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Dates and participating places may vary.
