Woodlands, cultivated fields, olive groves and cherry trees that blossom in spring shape the surroundings of Proença-a-Nova. This gives your trip several possible focuses: easy hiking trails with clear time estimates, viewpoints and riverside landscapes sit alongside archaeological remains, churches and museums. Comparing the duration of each route with its theme can help you plan excursions to fit the time available.
Hiking trails: compare duration and highlights
The first stage of the Rota da Cortiçada passes through the oldest streets of Proença-a-Nova and reaches the Cruzeiro at an altitude of 607 metres. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of Proença-a-Nova and the surrounding villages. The PR1 PNV “História na Paisagem” starts at the Igreja das Moitas. It is described as an easy, 9-kilometre trail with an estimated duration of 3.5 hours. The trail’s three Mamoas include the Anta do Vale do Alvito.
For a much shorter timeframe, the also-easy TP2 Fróia is another option: it is 4.6 kilometres long, starts at Praia Fluvial de Fróia and takes an estimated one hour. Comparing the two trails highlights their different time requirements; check the route details again before setting off. Another easy hike, the PR8 PNV – Caminho do Xisto de Figueira – Por Muros de Xisto, is an approximately 6.3-kilometre circular route. It follows the Ribeira de Figueira to an old olive oil mill and a bridge. You should also check the details for this trail before your hike.
The PR2 PNV “Os Segredos do Vale do Almourão” leads to a viewpoint with information boards about the area’s history and biodiversity, as well as three observation points overlooking a steep-sided valley. If you choose this route, also check the signposting before you start.
Riverside landscapes and viewpoints
Praia Fluvial da Fróia brings together several aspects of a visit: the TP2 Fróia starts there, and the river beach description mentions clear, crystal-clear water, restored mills, large sunbathing areas and a safe area for children. Another trail, at Praia da Aldeia Ruiva, follows the Ribeira da Isna through lush vegetation. Kites, eagles and black storks may be spotted along the way; sightings are not guaranteed.
Kayaks and pedal boats are available to rent at Praia Fluvial do Malhadal. There is also a floating pool with an area for children. As availability is seasonal, check whether these facilities are available before your visit. Praia Fluvial da Cerejeira is set in a natural environment considered rich in flora and fauna, and offers good conditions for sport fishing.
Miradouro do Almourão, near Sobral Fernando, offers views over the valley of the Rio Ocreza and the Portas de Almourão. Its geological features include river terraces formed as the river gradually cut deeper into its bed. So the focus here is not only on the view, but also on how the landscape was shaped.
Cultural heritage, village life and museums
Historical landmarks include a Roman bridge near São Pedro do Esteval that crosses the Ribeira da Pracana. In Proença-a-Nova, the Igreja Matriz features 18th-century gilded woodcarving. The traditional schist mill in Proença-a-Nova is also a local cultural highlight, with very large millstones. Moinho de Vento de Pergulho is considered worth seeing. Pedreira is considered a typical village in Proença-a-Nova.
The Museu Isilda Martins is divided into seven sections covering agriculture, forestry, domestic spaces and traditional crafts. It also displays everyday objects, clothing, agricultural tools and other household items from the first half of the 20th century. Espaço Ribeiro Farinha exhibits 75 works in painting, ceramic panels and sculpture. In Figueira, the communal oven is used weekly to bake bread and broa; the baked goods are then taken to the village shop.
The forest as an interactive theme
Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta offers an interactive science experience focused on the forest. In the “Aromas da Floresta” module, visitors can smell forest scents and guess where they come from. Booking is recommended; visitors without a reservation may have limited access, depending on available capacity. The centre lists its opening hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, and closes at midday on weekends and public holidays. Opening hours may change, so check the details before your visit.
